Migrating PERC/PowerEdge controlled PowerVault MD1220 as an extension of a PowerVault MD3620f

Hi everyone,

Actual setup:

* PowerEdge R320 with PERC acting as a File Server is connected to a PowerVault MD1220 (2 RAID volumes created from PERC on the MD1220) .

* 3 PowerEdge R720 Hyper-V Cluster with shared storage on a PowerVault MD3620f (FC)

I am wondering if I can safely migrate the MD1220 as an extension of the PowerVault MD3620f (I want to convert the R320 File Server to an HA VM on Hyper-V and get rid of the physical box).

If doing so on a fresh install seems quite easy, I don't know if in this case the existing RAID volumes on the MD1220 can be safely imported (sort of foreign config) when plugging this MD1220 as an extension of an MD3620f.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Regards

Nicolas

Hi Nicolas, If you want to add an MD1200 that was previously configured with PERC to the MD3620F later, the MD1200 must be reinitialized and configured again and this will cause data loss. I think you can take a backup of your MD1200 enclosure and then update the MD1200 firmware.
Likewise, after making your updates in the MD3620F, I would add the MD1200 expansion and then try to restore it I would back up.

If I quote from pg26 "Any storage array different from the MD storage array you migrate to (for example, from an MD3260 storage
array to an MD3260i storage array), the receiving storage array (MD3260i storage array in the example) does not
26
recognize the migrating metadata and that data is lost. In this case, the receiving storage array initializes the
physical disks and marks them as unconfigured capacity"  https://dell.to/3BgN0NW

Hope that helps!

Hi Erman,

OK that's pretty clear, I'm going to use temporary storage to migrate the MD1220.

I just found out that this question has been asked before:

Thanks for your help !
