Migrate from ME4084 to ME5084?

Hello - we have just received a PowerVault ME5084 that will be replacing our ME4084. This storage contains all of the datastores for our VMware environment. Our plan is to copy the data from the ME4084 to the ME5084. We have an alternate site where we will place the ME4084 along with a couple of new servers (VM Hosts) to where the ME5084 will replicate/sync to the ME4084.

The idea is to replicate the VMs from our main site to the alternate site where the VMs will be offline at the alternate site but, if the need arises we can bring those online.

We're trying to determine the most efficient way to do the following:

1. Copy the data from the ME4084 to the ME5084.

2. At the alternate site - sync the data from the ME5084 to the ME4084.

The options that we are looking at to copy/sync the data:

1. VMware replication

2. Veeam replication

3. Storage replication - I thought that this was an option (maybe from the EqualLogic arrays) where we could replicate at the volume/storage level but all that I can find regarding replication is using the vSphere replication adapter on the storage array.

Does anyone know which would be the most efficient, or of another option that we are not aware of?

Thanks!

John

Hi @johnnva,

I'm not an expert in data migration and system implementation, hence I'm not able to recommend proper steps.

The steps that you wrote seems to be relatively as it should be, I found this article, it might help in your migration: https://dell.to/3Hu33uG

As for storage replication, I think if I'm not wrong, you need certain license on ME storage for replication option. Probably best to speak to the storage support team to obtain more insights of the particular option.

Thanks for the link Joey - this looks like what I need to look at (need to do a more thorough search next time!).
