Md3220 and md1220 combo, how to configure none global hot spares.
The MD3220 is full of 300GB 15K SAS drives The MD1220 is full of 1TB NL "SAS" 7.2K drives. Both enclosures have disks 22 & 23 unused with the intention of being hot spares. However all mechanisms I use to create hot spares simply attaches all four drives to both enclosures. I would prefer to have the two spares drives only protecting the drives in their own enclosure. interestingly enough I asked the dell software to "auto configure" (sic) the hot spares and it decided two ONLY use the 1TB drives, and to use them to protect both enclosures. Additionally I was rather perplexed as to why it also allowed me to manually do the nonsensical configuration of allowing a 300GB drive to protect an enclosure made up of 24 1TB drives. Anyway, is it possible to have host spares associated with just one enclosure (or group of drives).? Thanks.

You cannot dedicate hotspares in an MD3k-series array. So a hotspare will take over for any drive in any enclosure as long as the size of the hotspare is the same or larger than the failed drive.

Hello Andrea Johnson,
As Dev Mgr stated that the hot spare drives has to be equal to the largest drive that is in your MD. Here is a link to the Administrator Guide & if you look on page 80 it list out all the rules & guidelines that the hot spare disk will follow. ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/Common/powervault-md3200_Administrator%20Guide_en-us.pdf
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I'm surprised you can not configure dedicated hot spares. Nothing on enclosure affinity either I will be annoyed if a 10K sas fails, and it chooses to use a 7.5K NL sas as a spare when a 10K SAS is available.
