MD3200i + 2x R710 + Windows 2019 in failover cluster mode

Hi all,

we recently upgraded all firmwares and SO of all machines in the object, we have a blocking problem when shared resource (eg. virtual  disk on MD3200i) is added to cluster.  The working node becomes unresponsive after 1 minute and then the only way is to reboot.  We double checked everything ad all is correct, we tried to downgrade to Windows server 2016 with same results. During the validation we have 2 kind of warnings, 1

on SCSI-3 validation :  the test has detected that the Persistent Reservation command took longer than 3 seconds to complete. This may impact cluster stability.

and on Validate Storage Spaces Persistent Validation:  same message

The system worked correctly for year with Windows 2008 R2 but now we need to move to different HyperV services so we upgraded to W2019.

Playing around with settings on MSDM panel we noted that if we change the Host SO type of two nodes from windows to linux, the first SCSI-3 validation error disappears, but the sencod remains.  Doing that, eliminates the systems hang issue. So it becames usable.

The question is, why this behaviour ?  Is it safe to keep this SO type on SAN ?  Do you have an upgrade for SAN module software that overcome this issue ?

PS: As reported before, all modules have latest available firmware.

Hello G. Antonio,

MD3200i has not been tested with windows 2019, so support will be limited.  Are both hosts in the same host group?  When you installed MPIO did you install the role prior to installing MDSM on the host?  You can clear the persistent reservation in MDSM or SMCLI.  Here are the commands that you will need.

View all virtual disk

"show allVirtualDisks reservations;"

To clear a persistent reservation, run the following:

"clear virtualDisk [VD_name] reservations;"

Here is also the link to the SMCLI guide as well. http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/powervault-md3200_cli-guide_en-us.pdf

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam,

we did the installation in the correct sequence for all machines and all versions of windows (2019, 2016).

Even clearing the eventual permanent reservations on shared resources doe not help with hang issue.

The system now is working with S.O. fild on MDM host panel set to Linux instead of windows.

best regards

G.Antonio
