How to manage MD1200 from R320 with PERC H710 Mini

Hello,

I have a PE R320 server with a PERC H710 Mini RAID controller and a 6Gbps SAS HBA. I connected the MD1200 to the R320 server through one of the SAS HBA ports. I can see the individual physical disks in the MD1200 from the server. However, I do not know how to setup RAID5 virtual disks using either BIOS or Server Administrator.

If I press Ctrl+C during the boot process, I can see the MD1200 disks, but I can not set up virtual disks. I have also tried using server administrator, but the storage page only shows a message stating "No storage controller detected". The iDRAC shows the disks in the MD1200 in the hardware inventory:

Disk 0 in Enclosure 0 on Connector 0 of RAID Controller in Slot 2
Disk 1 in Enclosure 0 on Connector 0 of RAID Controller in Slot 2
../..
Disk 11 in Enclosure 0 on Connector 0 of RAID Controller in Slot 2

I would like to create two virtual disks using several disks from the MD1200 in RAID5. Could you please tell me whether is it possible to do that? Do I have instead to set up the RAID5 virtual disks with software?

Yours faithfully,

Hello jesusangel,

The MD1200 is a DAS (Direct Attached Storage) enclosure that can be connected to a SAS controller for use as a JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks). Alternatively, it can be connected to a Dell PERC H810 host-based RAID controller.

If you are using a 6Gbps SAS HBA connected MD1200 you would be using Software RAID with Windows  Storage Spaces and PowerTools SDK for HW management. Storage spaces is the only one that uses a SAS HBA with a MD1200.

If you have PERC H810 connected MD1200 you would use OMSA and PERC BIOS for management. You would not be able to use the H710 as it is an Internal RAID controller.

PowerVault MD1200 documentation can be found here:

Hello Charles,

I truly appreciate your answer. As I do not have an external RAID controller, I created a software RAID using the bunch of disks.

Yours sincerely,
