How to import RAID with Stale Physical Disk after power failure

Hi,

My system is R720xd 3.5-inch trays with H810 and expansion to NetApp DS4246 Disk Array so that I can expand raid 6 to have more than 12 discs (limited by the R720xd ).

I was doing RAID 6 expansion to add discs (from 12 to 17) and this process was taking a pretty long time like days. There was a moment of power failure on the system so the NetApp DS4246 Disk Array got rebooted during the RAID reconfiguration process. After that, the discs are recognized as foreign and somehow the RAID6 original Virtual Drive can not be imported. How should I proceed with this?  Please help.

Please check the pictures below:

The system had only 1 user logged in, with no hardware change.

Hi @ekc_maga,

Thanks for letting us know at the point of time, H810 would work with NetApp DS4246 before the RAID 6 reconfigure.

To my experience, usually when there is a power failure that causes foreign configuration, the RAID controller would communicate with the storage and compare the RAID container configuration. But I am suspecting that the RAID controller is not able to fully to communicate with DS4246 for foreign configuration, hence you're not able to import foreign.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to provide a solution to your issue as I don't have good reference on NetApp DS4246 and PERC H810. Perhaps we may need to wait for any public user in this community to feedback on their experiences.

@DELL-Joey C   Thank you for quick reply !

Do you suggest that I should try to put the 12 disc back to R720xd and reimport and see if that fix the original RAID ? I think when first moving it from R720xd to the NetApp it was pretty easy to get recognized and imported and run.

Do you think a power failure during RAID reconfiguration could cause this error? Or this should be pretty safe and robust for power failure? I have not done raid reconfiguration before (this is my first time), I would imagine it should be robust since most UPS does not runs longer than 12 disc' RAID recon fig.

Ah, now I have a clearer picture. Yes. It is a worth a try. I don't know the outcome as it's not something I do.

Power failure during RAID reconfigure is very unsafe. Data lost may occur. Hopefully you can recover the data by trying to import foreign in R720XD chassis. Let's hope for the best.

I tried moving the original 12 discs back to R720xd and the result is the same as before.

Hi @ekc_maga,

Have you tried import foreign?

Yes, it shows the same error msg as my initial post's second picture (when it was in NetApp). I think the "Stale Physical Disk" is the key.

What does the status "ready" means? Does it mean the RAID is complete and no degrade?

What does the remark "Stale Physical Disk" mean? And how do I know which ones are "stale"?

Even if only partial recovery could be done that would be great.

Hi @ekc_maga,

Here's the remark point from the guide: Stale physical disk — The physical disk to be imported in the virtual disk has outdated data. It is currently hard to identify which disk/s is having an issue, may dig deep in the PERC logs. This may need the technical support to view at them. This probably happened during the power outage when the reconfiguration happened.

To my opinion, if data is important, we may need to stop troubleshooting, and you would need to obtain 3rd party vendor to retrieve lost data.
