How to Expand Storage to Dell PowerEdge Server With a SAN?

Hi

I have recently bought Dell Poweredge T410 server with a Perc 6/I RAID controller to get some hands on experience  with server hardware and play around with Windows Server OSs.

I've been looking at expanding storage with a PowerVault MD1000 or MD3000 as I already have some virtual machines on my personal PC and it would be nice to utilise the server for these virtual machines instead.

What I'm confused with is, what card and cables do I need to connect the SAN to the server?

Many thanks

Will

Hello Will,

The card and cables differ a bit depending on the MD that you are going to use.

MD1000 you need to use a PERC 5/e card in your server.  You will also need to use a 3gb sas cable to connect your MD1000 to your server.  Here is the Dell part# J9189 for the sas cable.  Here is the link to the support matrix for an MD1000. https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_powervault/powervault-md1000_service%20manual_en-us.pdf

MD3000 you will need a 3gb sas HBA.  Here is the Dell part# R8200 for the 3gb sas cable.  Here is also a link to the support matrix for the MD3000. https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_powervault/powervault-md3000i_reference%20guide_en-us.pdf

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

If I was going with the MD3000 option would a 'SFF-8470 to SFF-8470 SAS Cable' work?

Also in regard to a card would a Dell HBA H200E work?

Many thanks

Hello Will,

Yes a SFF-8470 to SFF-8470 sas cable is the correct cable.  You can’t use a H200 as it will not see your MD3000.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
