'HE: invalid elevator range, error during elevator init Code: 9E 09' fault on a TL-2000 unit

We have a TL-2000 library which has recently started showing the error message as below:

HE: invalid elevator range, error during elevator init
Code: 9E 09

The Tape Library interface shows it as a Robotic Failure, and as a result it locks the mechanics of the entire library, including the magazines (these can still be manually released at the back of the chassis). An initial investigation found that the robotic picker was unable to rotate past a certain point, so we organised a replacement with a third party support agency.

We received an entire replacement chassis, and have completely the entire unit except for the two drives, controller and management NIC. Despite this, the exact same fault is still present. We have since removed every tape from the magazines in case of a misaligned tape in the library and upgraded the firmware on both the library and the drives.

Has anyone had an issue where this fault has persisted despite a complete replacement of the faulty parts, or is this a case of exceptionally poor luck receiving another faulty part?

Hello,

The 9E 09 error simply means the elevator cannot complete its initialization. In almost all real cases it comes either from a mechanical elevator issue, usually a cracked or misaligned elevator gear, or from a controller VPD mismatch after a chassis swap, which prevents proper robotic homing.

The mechanical failure produces exactly this symptom, while Dell also documents that a library may fail to initialize after a chassis replacement if the enclosure and controller data don’t align.

Thanks
