HDD Compatibility Question - Dell Powervault MD1220

We use HDDs 900 GB SAS 6 Gbps 10K RPM F/W D1S4  (Model: WD9001BKHG-18D22V1)- Western Digital Manufacturing.

We buy HDDs 900 GB SAS 6 Gbps 10K RPM F/W LS08  (Model: ST900MM0006) - Seagate Manufacturing.

So the F/W is different because they are different manufacturers. Could this cause compatibility issues in RAID?

Hi,

Usually I would advise users to use compatible drives for our storage system as the controller communicates with the drive and sends data information to iDRAC for monitoring. There are some instances that MD logs might not show information about the drive as it is unable to communicate with the firmware.

Although, you are already on going the use of WD9001BKHG, which I can't find the drive under compatible drive for MD1220 but it is working as expected, and you only wanted to expand or replace with ST900MM0006. I am able to find ST900MM0007 under firmware list for MD1220 but not ST900MM0006.

There is no documented information that you can't use different drive mode with different firmware. My personal opinion is that you can use mix drive manufacturer but don't mix them in the same array. You can mix them in the same enclosure but in a different array.

Hello @DELL-Joey C . We purchased ST900MM0006 HDDs to replace WD9001BKHG-18D22V1 HDDs when they were damaged. In the Dell Powervault MD1220 we only use a RAID array. Is it better to return purchased HDDs?

If they were intended to be used in the same Virtual Disk as the WD9001BKHG-18D22V1 drives then I would suggest returning them to get additional WD9001BKHG-18D22V1s so the drives match in the Virtual Disk.

Let me know if this helps.
