Dell EMC ME4012 Storage Array - Automated tiered storage (ATS) - VMDK
Here is the scenario:
We have a VM with a 1.5TB “disk” used for roaming profiles. Much of the data in this “disk” needs to have fast access, but there is also a substantial amount of infrequently used commingled data.
The Disks in the SAN will be about 2TB (Raid 1) SSD, and 6TB SAS (RAID 6) Usable.
Question:
Will the Automated tiered storage (ATS) service relocate parts of the VMDK with the frequently used data/bits/blocks to the SSD drives, while keeping the infrequently used data/bits/blocks of the VMDK on the SAS drives (i.e. spread a single VMDK file across multiple storage tiers). OR will the ATS relocate the entire 1.5TB VMDK to the 2TB SSD?
Thanks!

FYI: Message received from Dell Support:
"To answer your question the ME4012 can tier data by moving blocks (not the entire VMDK but rather small blocks of data) across the multiple tiers, in this instance the SSD drives would serve as the performance tier for active data and the SAS drives for the colder data. As the home directory blocks are accessed, they will be tiered up accordingly."
