Dell certified drives not activating in MD3820i

I have an MD3820i that I have filled with Dell branded, Seagate-manufactured Constellation.2 drives, p/n #ST91000640SS, DP/N #09W5WV

Two out of the batch power up but won't let me administer them in Modular Disk Storage Manager. I get an error when I try to upgrade their firmware that says Error 249 - The physical disk firmware download operation failed because one or more of the physical disks you selected has a Bypassed or Offline status and is inaccessible. Please make sure the physical disks you selected do not have a status of Bypassed or Offline, and then retry the operation.

I don't have another compatible SAS enclosure handy to use to troubleshoot further. We are trying to get replacements from our reseller but is there anything I can do to fix these? They all appeared to come with the same fw version but these two just won't activate and I'd really like the capacity I paid for. I have to rack the MD very soon so if I can get them online before then it'd be pretty great.

Everything I can find online is about people trying to use 3rd party drives in an MD but these are valid Dell branded drives so I don't understand what the problem is unless the drives are just bad.

Hello Adam Stadnick,

What you can do is if you have a Dell server you can put the drives in there and erase any data that is on them.  Once you have wiped them you should be able to insert them back into your MD3820i and get them to be seen. if your dell server is not able to see the drives then they could have gotten damaged in shipping and you may need to replace them.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
