Connecting to an MD3460 RAID controller with an Adaptec 1100-8e

I'm having an interesting problem connecting to an MD3460 RAID controller from a machine with an Adaptec 1100-8e SAS HBA. The background here:

* The second machine formerly had a Dell 12Gbps SAS HD HBA, and we're trying to debug some instability in a filesystem composed of 8 LUNs exported by the MD3460. We were hoping a change of HBA might shed some light on the situation.

* After replacing the card on the client, and changing the HBA IDs in the PowerVault MD Storage Manager (the card IDs were helpfully auto-detected by MDSM), the client sees only 2 of the exported LUNs. This is true both in the BIOS and from the installed OS (Ubuntu 18.04.5).

* Putting the old Dell 12Gbps HBA back in place (and again changing the two HBA IDs in MDSM) sees all 8 LUNs again.

Naively, I would expect the Adaptec HBA either to see all of the LUNs, or none of them. Are there any obvious things I might be missing that would result in an incomplete export of LUNs? (I've tried two separate Adaptec 1100-8e HBAs as well, on the off chance we got a bad card.)

Many thanks for any pointers or hints you can provide!

Hello,

First of all, thank you for your detailed and understandable post. I have seen similar oddities when using the unsupported card on the server-side. For example, one thing I remember is that we had a user who said he saw VD in RAID 5 as RAID 0. Such oddities are basically caused by incompatibilities as you know FW. So somehow it cannot work with its full functionality. Although I know there are users who can use some non-Dell cards or disks. This case made me think of a similar situation. Frankly, I haven't come across anyone using this Adaptec 1100-8e HBA. I actually understand what you mean, it makes sense to think that he would either see them all or not at all. So I researched and looked to see if there is a setting you can make but I couldn't find anything. If anyone can use this HBA in the community somehow, their own experience will be useful.
