Attach the ESXi 6.5 Host to a MD3200 Storage with Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) IO Cards
Hi everyone,
I need your help in regard to connecting my Dell server (Power edge R510) with SAS IO card to my storage (Power vault MD3200).
I installed the (Updated) ESXi-6.5.0-20170702001-standard on my server and I can see the identifier on my PERC H810 Adapter. As you can see in the pictures attached, I configured the virtual disk on my storage and mapped it to this identifier but I can not see the datastore in my Vcenter for this machine.
I also saw this link (https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-kn/540321/vmware-esxi-how-to-attach-the-host-to-a-storage-center-array-with-serial-attached-scsi-sas-io-cards-qrl-video) but I don't have this software and I configured my storage with PowerVault Modular storage manager.
Please help me...

Hello Qmars,
You are using the wrong controller in your server. You need to connect your MD3200 to a sas hba, & not a PERC card. Your MD3200 has its own raid controllers, and by connecting them to a PERC H810 is a raid controller as well. you need a 6GB sas hba & then your virtual disk can be seen. Here is the link to the Support matrix & if you look on page 14 we list out the supported sas hba’s. https://dell.to/2D1ynUr

Hi and thanks for your reply. You mean that the PERC H810 is not supported for my Dell R510 server?
So which card I have to use ... can you give me a model number?
Do I have to change anything in my BIOS setting?

And another question is that if I change the configuration setting (bios) of my PERC H810 card to HBA mode is it ok or not? I mean can I then connect it to MD3200...
Because as I see in this link it is changeable: https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/04/poweredge-rc-h330/perc9ugpublication/switching-the-controller-to-hba-mode?guid=guid-1fcc87e1-d534-451a-9947-56f1175886c5&lang=en-us
thanks again...
Looking forward to hearing from you soon...

You need a cheap 6Gbit SAS HBA and not a full blown H810 PERC for connecting a MD3200. Take a look to https://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/04/campaigns/dell-raid-controllers?c=us&l=en&s=bsd#campaignTabs-2

Hello Qmars,
To connect your MD3200 to your R510 you need a 6GB sas hba. A perc card is not supported to use with your MD3200. You can use any external 6gb sas hba to connect your MD3200 to your R510. Your can’t change your perc bios so that you can use a perc to connect to your MD3200 as we have tested this & were not able to work.
