That sounds accurate - PowerPath licensing does not take in to account multiple cores per CPU socket. So in your example you have 2 servers, each with 2 CPUs...you would need to license PowerPath for 4 CPUs total.

Thomas, thank you for your help. That is what my HP reseller is telling me also. I haven't purchased a PowerPath license for a few years now and then it was from Dell. Back then I only remeber purchasing one license per server, I could be wrong. Thanks again!

PowerPath licensing was updated in Q2/Q3 2009 to simplify ordering and to align with VMware packaging schedules.

EMC PowerPath and PowerPath/VE are both licensed by CPU.

So, if I want to purchase 2 servers for a cluster I would have to prchase 4 licenses, (if each server has dual quad core procs)?

Hi,
Could someone please provide an example of how non-volume PowerPath and PowerPath/VE licencing works.
My understanding is that it is per server, but tiered based on the number of CPUs/sockets.
For example:
Three two CPU/socket servers would require 3 x Tier 1 (2-7 CPUs) PowerPath licenses
Three eight CPU/socket servers would require 3 x Tier 2 (8+ CPUs) PowerPath licenses
Many thanks

Mark:
Your basic understanding is correct. PowerPath is priced per CPU socket, but there must an accompanying server license for each licensed host.
Here's how PowerPath/VE licensing works:
Model Number (and Description)
Licensing Method
How to Order
Electronic License for Host
456-101-295 (unserved license-VM)
456-101-296 (served license-VM)
456-101-600 (Hyper-V license)
Based on number of supported servers (also called hosts) per operating system
Order quantity of electronic license for host determined by entering the number of supported servers (also called hosts) per operating system (Hyper-V or vSphere)
CPU Socket Pricing Model
Individual licensing:
457-100-182 (2-7 sockets, standard)
457-100-183 (8+ sockets, standard)
457-100-186 (2-7 sockets, add-on)
457-100-187 (8+ sockets, add-on)
Individual licensing is tiered based on number of CPU sockets per server (Hyper-V or vSphere)
Order appropriate licenses by entering quantity of sockets per server (host) to be supported for each pricing model (individual or volume tier)
Media Kit Model Number
PPVE-VM-KIT
PP-WN-KIT
Order quantity of kits1 (optional, one kit per operating system: WN for Windows Hyper-V and VM for VMware vSphere)
In addition, you MUST order the POWERPATH-VE model which is used to tie the 456/457 models together in the back office.
For Physical, the process is slightly different.
Model Number (and Description)
Licensing Method
How to Order
License Counter
PP-XXX1-COUNTR
Based on number of supported servers (also called hosts) per operating system
Order quantity of counters determined by entering the number of supported servers (also called hosts) per operating system
CPU Socket Pricing Model
Individual licensing:
PP-X86-T1 (2-7 sockets2, x86)
PP-X86-T2 (8+ sockets, x86)
PP-NON-X86-T1 (2-7 sockets2, non-x86)
PP-NON-X86-T2 (8+ sockets, non-x86)
Individual licensing is tiered based on number of CPU sockets per server (x86 or non-x86)
Order appropriate licenses by entering quantity of sockets per server (host) to be supported for each pricing model (individual or volume tier)
Media Kit Model Number
PP-XXX1-KIT
Order quantity of kits (one kit per operating system)

Hi Bob,
I think you will agree this is incredibly confusing!!!
Therefore can you give me an example based on my previous examples for both physical and VE licenses.
What I am struggling to understand is the following:
"PowerPath is priced per CPU socket, but there must an accompanying server license for each licensed host."
I would have said it is priced per server with tiering based on the number of CPU sockets in the server (i.e. if I have 10 servers I would purchase 10 PowerPath licenses but some would be tier 1 and some maybe tier 2).
It is therefore not priced per CPU socket.
I have searched all over PowerLink to get clarification, but struggled to find anything.
Many thanks

OK, using your examples:
Three two CPU/socket servers would require 3 x Tier 1 (2-7 CPUs) PowerPath licenses
For PowerPath/VE served you would need to order:
3 x 456-101-296 (served license-VM) - one per server
6 x 457-100-182 (2-7 sockets, standard) - two per server x number of servers (3)
1 POWERPATH-VE model
For PowerPath/VE unserved you would need to order:
3 x 456-101-295 (unserved license-VM) - one per server
6 x 457-100-182 (2-7 sockets, standard) - two per server x number of servers (3)
1 POWERPATH-VE model
For PowerPath Physcial on Windows and Linux you would need to order:
3 x PP-XXX1-COUNTR - one per server (Windows or Linux)
6 x PP-X86-T1 (2-7 sockets, x86) - two per server x number of servers (3)
1 PP-XXX1-KIT media kit (Windows or Linux)
For PowerPath Physical on UNIX (AIX, HPUX, and Solaris) you would need to order:
3 x PP-XXX1-COUNTR - one per server (AIX, HPUX, Solaris)
6 x PP-NON-X86-T1 (2-7 sockets2, non-x86) - two per server x number of servers (3)
1 PP-XXX1-KIT media kit (AIX, HPUX, Solaris)
Three eight CPU/socket servers would require 3 x Tier 2 (8+ CPUs) PowerPath licenses
For PowerPath/VE served you would need to order:
3 x 456-101-296 (served license-VM) - one per server - no change from previous example
24 x 457-100-183 (8+ sockets, standard) - eight per server x number of servers (3)
1 POWERPATH-VE model
For PowerPath/VE unserved you would need to order:
3 x 456-101-295 (unserved license-VM) - one per server - no change from previous example
24 x 457-100-183 (8+ sockets, standard) - eight per server x number of servers (3)
1 POWERPATH-VE model
For PowerPath Physcial on Windows and Linux you would need to order:
3 x PP-XXX1-COUNTR - one per server (Windows or Linux) - no change from previous example
24 x PP-X86-T2 (8+ sockets, x86) - eight per server x number of servers (3)
1 PP-XXX1-KIT media kit (Windows or Linux)
For PowerPath Physical on UNIX (AIX, HPUX, and Solaris) you would need to order:
3 x PP-XXX1-COUNTR - one per server (AIX, HPUX, Solaris) - no change from previous example
24 x PP-NON-X86-T2 (8+ sockets, non-x86) - eight per server x number of servers (3)
1 PP-XXX1-KIT media kit (AIX, HPUX, Solaris)
