powerpath how to check/confirm if no VE/vcenter VSI

i am having a unity and currently i can see the powerpath is the owner in vcenter but Path selection policy is MRU.

i have no powerpath vm or anything else in vcenter nor i can run any powerpath commands in esxi.

How i can check what PSP has been selected  by powerpath, when i have no powerpath VE /vcenter VSI? ( is it possible )

do we still need to configure the PSP policy for first time to RR even powerpath is the owner of PSP?

*i have checked on ESXi that both paths are having traffic so it is utilizing both port.

Hi VirtualRay - are there any PowerPath binaries installed on the servers or is there any entries in the following virtual directories:

/opt/emc/powerpath/bin (on Linux) or install_dir\PowerPath (on Windows)

Can you run any rpowermt commands? Do you have any PowerPath rules assigned?

If PowerPath is not installed it should not be listed as the owner in vCenter.

Hi Robert,

these binaries are installed.

powerpath.cim.esx              6.3.0.00.00-b105                   EMC              PartnerSupported  2018-10-18

powerpath.lib.esx              6.3.0.00.00-b105                   EMC              PartnerSupported  2018-10-18

powerpath.plugin.esx           6.3.0.00.00-b105                   EMC              PartnerSupported  2018-10-18

And when i try to run the command on ESXi license is disabled.

/opt/emc/powerpath/bin] /opt/emc/powerpath/bin/powermt display paths

ERROR: License autoregistration is disabled. Commands not allowed.

there are no powerpath rule installed but i think it is using by itself because we have EMC unity.

Hi VirtualRay,

there must be a management host which serves rpowerpath tools and required  licenses to manage PP on ESXi.

If there is no host yet/anymore, have you tried to follow PP/VE Installation and Administration Guide [1] / Chapter 2 "Using PowerPath/VE in an unserved license environment" ?

Thanks,

Robert

hi iROb,

there is no management server in our environment and powerpath is not licensed.

powermt is al time giving below error:

ERROR: License autoregistration is disabled. Commands not allowed.

in this situation does my failover works if one of the port got disconnection?

or what capabilities of powerpath available if the host is not licensed for power path ..

i have vmware ESXi servers.

Hi virtualRay,

there is no concept of unlicensed functionality on the vSphere host with respect to multipathing.

You can check with that command if PowerPath can obtain a license from array, if it was purchased within a FX-Bundle :

- rpowermt display host=

- rpowermt check_registration host=

opt/emc/powerpath/bin] /opt/emc/powerpath/bin/powermt check_registration

        PowerPath License Information:

        ------------------------------

        Host ID         : XXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXX

        State           : unlicensed

        License search path: /etc/emc:/etc/emc/licenses:/opt/EMCpower:/opt/EMCpower/licenses

        Warning: PowerPath is not licensed.

none of the command works, so in this situation, will powerpath be able to perform PSP ( failover ) if one port become unavailable?

the person who installed the ESXi did not did any configuration on Powerpath nor have any interface to change the powerpath settings.
