PowerPath does not pring the second path up after failover
Hello ,
i was trying to simulate a failover test on an AIX machine, i removed one cabel for few minutes, then replug it again , the server can not detect the second path till we ran powermt config. running powermt display shows the second path as "FAILED" till reconfig PP.The question is why do i need to run powermt config? it should be detected automatically without interaction ,right ? am running the latest PP version!

Hi. Are you connected to a CLARiiON? What failover mode did you configure for the host?
Thanks, Brion

What version of PP? What version of AIX? Can you detail your exact steps and provide output of the "powermt display?"
Thanks, Brion

PP 5.3 , AIX 5.3. we removed the cable from HBA0 then wait few second , plug it again , powermt display shows dead paths , plugging the cables back does not bring up the path automatically ,you should run powermt config..

Hi. What is the output of the "powermt display options" command?

Powerpath should bring the dead path back to alive after the issue is corrected (cable pluged back).
This may take some time, PP rescans the paths times in times. In order to force a rescan of the path you can run a "powermt restore", so PP will rescan the path right away.
I hope it helps.

Attempting to manually restore using the "powermt restore" command is a good idea because PowerPath restores dead paths automatically based on the results of path testing. PowerPath path testing is given a lower priority than application I/O. If the system is busy, it may take longer for a path to be automatically restored. Also, the output of the "powermt display options" should show whether or not the periodic autorestore is on or off. If it is off, the path will not automatically restore.

Try: "powermt display options"
You should see an output similar to this:
powermt display options:
Default storage system class: all
Show CLARiiON LUN names: true
Path Latency Monitor: On
Path Latency Threshold: 1 Sec.
Storage
System Class Attributes
------------ ----------
Symmetrix periodic autorestore = on
status = managed
CLARiiON periodic autorestore = on
status = managed
Hitachi periodic autorestore = on
status = managed
Invista periodic autorestore = on
status = managed
HP xp periodic autorestore = on
status = managed
Ess periodic autorestore = on
status = managed
