"Virtual Disk Not On Preferred Path” message on PowerVault storages.

Hello. At my company, we use a PowerVault MD1220 and a PowerVault MD3600i connected together. However, when using the management software, the message "Virtual Disk Not On Preferred Path" is displayed and it says:

Preferred owner: RAID Controller Module in slot 1
Current owner: RAID Controller Module in slot 0

I've already tried clicking on the volume and changing the "preferred path" or even running the "Redistribute Virtual Disks" option. When doing either of the two cases described, the problem is resolved momentarily, but after a few minutes the alert appears again.

This message is only displayed for volumes related to "RAID Controller Module in Slot 1".

What tests can I run?

Than you have to check the Hosts and change there perferred path.  The PowerVault have a fixed assignment from volume to one of the 2 controler modules.  The Hosts needed to "talk" to the given controlle module and not the other one. If they do this will trigger the "not on perferred path" warning on the powervault.

A vSphere ESXi hosts have 3 VMware Path Selection Policies like MRU, Fixed and RR.

Depends on whats happend a simple Host reboot can solve a lot of problems.

For sure you have a mpo modul installed and this will have different settings for using MostRescentlyUse, or FixedPath for every volume.

It can be a little bit challanging when you have multible servers connected to your MD.  You need a topology plan to find out how the packets are routed.

I suggest to reboot the Hosts first to see if you get it back to normal.
