Poweredge R420 No network Setup in BIOS Setup

Hi, I want to boot my Dell Poweredge R420 from an iSCSI drive. To enable this I read so far i have to make some settings in

setup > bios setup > there is no menu point „network setup/settings„

But this menu does not exist. Doesn’t matter if I boot with BIOS Oder UEFI.

Thank you.

Hi @christianhoh,

In BIOS settings, it has only controls to enable and disable. For iSCSI configuration on the network card, you may need to access the device settings. It should be located under system setup menu main menu > device settings.

Christianhoh,

Is the server up to date?
Also, when you boot the server and hit CTRL-S (after BIOS prompt), do you see any iSCSI options under that network page?

I thought so also, but there are no configuration options given.Bildschirmfoto 2023-03-28 um 17.00.05.pngBildschirmfoto 2023-03-28 um 17.00.17.png

The Legacy Boot Options should be mention iSCSI as well or am I wrong?

Hi @christianhoh,

I noticed the firmware is 21.6.0. Probably if you can, try version 21.4 firmware on your network card.

Thank you for the advise!
We are getting closer to the solution.
Now the missing menus are there, unfortunately I am unable to save configurations. I even cant disable PXE boot on one of the NICs, after I click save "Critical Saving Changes Unable to save settings" appears. Also when I enable iSCSI and edit all my values.

Hi, that one is a tough one.  Could you try to factory defaults might be helpful. If you still have issues, you can try to remove and reinstall the network card on your system.

Hi,
A factory reset does not change anything. Cant change PXE/iSCSI settings with same unspecific/unhelpful error.

I'm thinking about what can cause doesn't save settings. It could be related to the FW version or the network card itself. I know it sounds a bit odd but you can try to drain the flea power: How do I Reset and Drain Power of my Dell PowerEdge Server? https://dell.to/3uWHUmg If you have a known good same network card in your environment you can try to x-test with swapping.

I took the Reset and Drain way, but this does not change anything.
Unfortunately I dont have other systems to try an x-test.
Also it´s the onboard NIC, which makes it even harder, i guess

Thanks

Hello christianhoh,

I think it sounds like you were able to successfully configure it.

The configuration of that will not be configurable in the iDRAC7 but it will be in the system BIOS.

Can you make sure the system BIOS is up to date?

BIOS 2.9.0
