Fans on poweredge R720 really high
Hello all,
I have been noticing that my fans on the machine are really loud for the temperature that the components are at. I feel like they are at max speed when it is not really doing anything. I set it up so that basically the dell hardware controls the fan speeds. But I feel that there is something wrong since again, I am not doing anything and the temps seem to be in normal range.
Are there any diagnostics that I can run to help me to see if there is some issue preventing my fans from not being at max rpm?

Hello,
What was done on the server around the time the issue started?
Are there any non-Dell parts?
Have any parts been added or removed from original configuration?
One thing to make sure the cover is closed and the intrusion switch is not tripped.

It has been like this since I bought it. I don't see any non-dell parts on it. Intrusion switch is not tripped. What diagnostics can I run on it to maybe check sensors?

Hello, could we ask you to check iDRAC logs for any hardware related issues and check also what the fan speed is at the moment.

My CPU 1 and CPU 2 temps are 47 and 39 respectively.
All of my fans are at 95% PWM according to what the iDRAC says
For my CPU, it is as follows:
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2695 v2 @ 2.40GHz
I do have this message though:
Technically, I did add in an aftermarket PCIe to USB converter the 20 gbps one for use on the OS to do high speed data transfers (instead of using the USB 2.0 ports)
But would the fans really overcompensate for that?

What did you mean exactly with overcompensating?

There is a note in the message saying Fan speeds may have changed to add additional cooling to the cards. Maybe the fan speeds are higher because of that and are overcompensating?

Hello,
You have found the source of fans running high.
The PCIe to USB converter is a non-Dell part with non-Dell firmware.
The iDRAC doesn’t know what it is so it sets the fans to high to prevent over heating.
Try removing any non-Dell parts and check fan speed.
To let you know; we do not have any validated pcie to usb adapter cards validated for the server.

Ok, so I pulled the card and the fans are still running high

Do you have all shrouds and blanks in place?
If you removed that pcie card did you put a blank in place?
How many fans do you have installed?
A Note: R720 and R720xd cooling fans are not compatible with each other and must not be interchanged.
