Determining hardware details for Dell PowerEdge R620

I recently acquired a Dell PowerEdge R620 after I received Dell PowerEdge R220 II from somebody. After installing Ubuntu Server and others on the R220 II, I was hooked and setting up a Home Lab. I looked inside to find 2 CPUS and 88Gb RAM much to my delight. From my understanding, it has a 4 Drive System and has 4 empty drive slots. I looked into the pics of other 8 Drive System R620 servers on eBay and it has an 8 bay backplane I believe that's what it's called.

My question is, "Would I be able to upgrade my R620 from 4 Drive System to 8 Drive System?"

I made comparisons and saw eBay listing for 8 Drive backplane. "Would I be able to buy the 8 drive backplane and buy cables to connect it to the controller"

Below is what my connector looks like

And this is what an 8 Drive System is

Any information would be appreciated.

P.S. - It has a service tag but because I'm not the original owner, I cannot login to the Dell site. It has two 750W PSUs if that helps

Hello thanks for choosing Dell.

Dell PowerEdge R620 Technical Guide

Please refer to page 11:

The R620 has two chassis options: an 8-drive bay option or a 10-drive bay option. A chassis cannot be reconfigured or upgraded after point of purchase.

@DELL-Young E

Thanks for the reply.

From what you've described, the R620 has two chassis, which is 8 bay and 10 bay. So chances are, my R620 has an 8 bay chassis.

I'll revise my query a bit. The R620 that I have seem to have a 4 bay backplane. If I get an 8 bay backplane and appropriate SAS connector, and I've seen listings on eBay, etc.. would it work. Or do I have to upgrade the controller as well with a BIOS update.

Adding the hardware would be just fine, working on BIOS seems won't be necessary I think.

I actually want to know what this cable/connector is called (highlighted). My cable (first pic) only seemed to occupy 60% of the connector and only sees bay 2 and 3. When I connected the cable to the left, it was able to see the other drives (0 and 1). I also wish to know where I can buy it.

I sorted the issue on my R620. The wrong cable was used by the previous owner. I found a re-seller that had the proper cable so bays 0 and 1 are now recognised properly. I don't know the part number. He simply pulled it out of an R620 with a 4 drive backplane. I'm happy that it's working and I can now concentrate on using my server for VMs, containers, etc.

This can be marked as solved even though the answer is for the OP
