T140/S140

T140 (BIOS 2.17.3) with 2 NVMe & 2 RAID 1 SATA SSDs.  NVMe are on a Dell add in card.

S140 (5.11.0-0000)

SATA settings in BIOS set to RAID mode.

iDRAC9 (Firmware 7.00.l00.174) Says no drives installed.  No NVMe no SATA.

In BIOS mode S140 CTRL-R screen says "NVMe drives have been detected. To configure RAID, use only the S140 UEFI Configuration Utility"  SATA drives don't show up.

Changed to UEFI mode and in S140 Configuration Utility it shows the SATA RAID 1 under Set Bootable Device.

Under Convert to Non-RAID disk it says "There are no RAID disks that can be converted to Non-RAID Disk(s)."

Under Convert to RAID it also shows nothing.

Rescan disks shows the 2 SATA disks, the DVD drive and the RAID 1 virtual disk.

Manage Virtual Disk Properties shows the RAID 1 virtual disk.

View Physical Disk Properties allows me to select NVMe but then says "There are no physical disks currently detected."

Why can't I boot from the RAID 1 virtual disk?  It doesn't show in the BIOS boot order.

Why don't the NVMe drives show up anywhere?  The S140 obviously detects them since it tell me they are there before I switch to UEFI.

Another issue is it won't boot from my 2022 or 2025 server USB no matter what port it is plugged into.

It will boot from the DVD and install on the SATA RAID 1 to the first reboot but then won't boot from the RAID 1 I installed to since it doesn't show up in the boot order.

???

One more thing.  UEFI Boot Sequence in BIOS lists "Unavailable: Windows Boot Manager"

Discovered something really strange.  Remember it won't boot from USB flash for install.  I boot from DVD, start the install & it asks for a driver to be able to see disks.  I put the driver on my previous install USB and it sees the driver and RAID SATA disks.

Then I noticed that the install switches to the USB and quits reading the DVD.  ???

If I use a blank USB and just put the driver on it the driver install fails.  Strange.

Also the USB is showing up as C:

Maybe I should try to change the drive letter?

Update:  Changing the USB drive letter to G: got the install to run and it now boots from the SATA RAID1.  Now the problem is when the OS is attempting to load it blue screens with Inaccessible Boot Device.  Fun.

Update:  BIOS 2.18.0 came out today so I installed it.  I also downloaded the OS Driver pack and mounted it with iDRAC to use on install.  Having the Driver Pack mounted keeps the install from booting from the DVD media that I select in OS deployment.  I can select the DVD install media but then it fails on the deployment reboot where it asks to hit any key to boot from DVD to start the OS install.

Update:  Tried Server 2022 DVD since that is one of the deployment options and have the same no boot from DVD issue.

Hello, since you have an issue with DVD, we can consider using a USB instead.

The only reason I was using a DVD is I can't get it to boot from a USB drive.  It doesn't see them for booting no matter what I've tried.

Hello,

S140 is not a card and iDRAC will not show any RAID config, working as designed.

then I can suggest this now:

I realize the S140 is not a card.  I wasn't saying that.  I was saying the NVMe drives are on a Dell card.

I followed the other document to attempt the install.  Apparently there are some serious bugs since the system will mount the OS driver iso but as soon as it is mounted the DVD drive won't boot and if you use a USB stick the USB is assigned drive C which kills the install.

The S140 driver alone on a USB stick fails to install.

The OS Driver pack iso works after changing it to a different drive letter so I finally got 2022 installed on the SATA RAID1 using F10 to deploy and the DVD.

Now to figure out why the S140 can't see the NVMe drives in UEFI mode.  It can see them in BIOS mode but tells me to switch to UEFI to configure them.

Thanks!

Hi,

You mentioned NVMe drives on a Dell card, what card would that be? - Does it have a DPN#?

Assuming you are using compatible hardware on the NVMe, have you checked: https://dell.to/3CKja9E

I did try the instructions in that article.  There are no "NVMe Settings" in the BIOS.

Hello, DP/N 023PX6 -> I don't recognize this number. Would you upload a picture of the sticker so we can see in detail?

The NVMe card shows up in the Device Manager and one extra disk shows up in Disk Management.  It has the partitions and files on it from one of the attempted Server 2025 installs.

Hello, 23PX6 is an Ultra-Speed Drive Duo LP Bracket PCIe Card, not for servers.

Dell Precision parts on PowerEdge won't be recognized as a boot device, I'm afraid.
