Requesting assistance with hard drive part numbers for Dell FC630 and FC640 servers
Hello everybody. I’m in the market for a few Dell server hard drives. However, before I make a purchase, I have a few questions I’m hoping someone here will be kind enough to answer for me.
First, what are the part numbers for the largest 512n, 512e and 4Kn spinning hard drives (not SSDs) that will work in BOTH an FC630 and FC640? Per the document at the link below, my options appear to be as follows; 512n (1.2TB), 512e (1.8TB and 2.4TB), 4Kn (N/A). Though, since that document is from 2018, I would imagine things have changed since then.
Second, does Dell lock its hard drives, say, using firmware, to certain server models? The reason I ask is, on eBay, I see several Dell branded, 1.2TB, 2.5 inch, 10K RPM, 12Gbps, non-FIPS SED, 512n, SAS hard drives that all appear to be the same physically, but have very different prices. Does that mean the lower priced drives only work in certain low end systems, while the higher priced drives only work in certain high end systems?
Thank you all for your time!

PE4JB,
While this is a question better suited for sales, I will do my best.
The largest 512e drive I see compatible on both the FC630 and FC640 would be part # 1D0F5, which is a 2.4TB.
The largest 512n drive I see compatible on both would be part # CK3MN, a 1.2TB
The largest 4Kn drive I see compatible on both would be part # GH86F, which is a 2TB 7.5k. Whereas the largest 10k would be a 1.8TB part # DJY4Y.
As far as "locking" the drives, Dell doesn't do that along the Poweredge line. Now there are cases where the same part # can only work in certain systems, but that is based on the Equallogic, Compellent, and MD storage lines
Let me know if this helps

Thank you for such a timely response, DELL-Chris H! At the risk of pushing my luck, would it be possible for you to please answer a few more questions I now have?
1) Will a 400-AUSL (2.4TB, SAS HDD) in drive tray model NRX7Y also work in both an FC630 and FC640?
2) Will an SXKLTK (400GB, SAS SSD) from an FC630 work in an FC640?
3) What are the largest SATA (not SAS) HDDs and SSDs that work in both an FC630 and FC640?
4) If hard drives aren’t locked to specific server models, would either of the following 1.8TB, SAS HDDs work in both an FC630 and FC640? For whatever reason, they’re significantly less expensive.
Dell part number GP3FR

Thanks again!

Not a problem at all, no worries.
1. While the drive is listed for both systems, the carrier is only showing under the FC630 (FC640 carrier appears to be KM9DJ)
2. I am not seeing that drive listed for the FC640.
3. The largest SATA drive listed for both would be part # VR92X, a 2TB 7.2k SATA. Also, there are only two SATA drives listed for the FC640, both of which are supported on the FC630, the other drive being a 1TB (part 8DN1Y).
4. GP3FR is not listed for the FC640, only the FC630
Happy to help.

Thanks DELL-Chris H! This has been quite helpful.
Would it be possible for you to please clarify the following?
1) What SATA SSDs/carriers are compatible with the FC640?
2) What carrier model number would I need to use a GP3FR (1.8TB, SAS HDD) in an FC630?
Thanks again!
