Replacing PowerEdge R740xd with PowerEdge R650
Please let me know is it possible/compatible or not.
I have existing setup of the following devices:
PowerEdge R740xd
Serial Attached SCSI controller: Broadcom / LSI SAS3008 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-3 (rev 02)
PowerVault ME5084
Now we want to replace the server PowerEdge R740xd with PowerEdge R650 and want to use the existing SAS Controller from R740xd and ME5084 with it.

EMCmember,
I will do my best to answer your questions.
1) While it is not included in the guide you referenced, the ME5 series is supported with the R650. The issue is that the technical guide you referenced was released in September 2021 and the ME5 series released in 2022.
2) You're correct in your understanding, e=external / i=internal
3) The SAS 12gbps Host Bus Adapter you linked is not supported on the R650, it looks to be mostly supported on 13th and 14th generations.I am also not seeing any other SAS 12gbps controllers listed for the R650 either.
Let me know if this helps.

Hello
The Broadcom/LSI SAS3008 controller from your PowerEdge R740xd is not officially supported on the PowerEdge R650. While it shares the same chipset as the Dell HBA330, the R650 is designed for newer, certified controllers such as the HBA355i, HBA465i, or PERC H755.
Using the SAS3008 may result in limited functionality. For full compatibility with your PowerVault ME5084, we recommend using a supported HBA like the HBA355i, which is validated for external SAS storage on the R650.
Let us know if you need help selecting the right controller for your configuration.

Hi Marco,
I am very thankful to you for replying to my query.
I still have few points on which I need clarification, please help me by replying to it.
1. In the Dell PowerEdge R650 Technical guide PowerVault ME5 series storage is not listed in the supported storage list.
2. As per the Dell Support Site the compatible HBA for ME5 Series storage is Dell HBA355e Adapter Low Profile/Full Height, CK. But you mentioned HBAs which are ending with "i".
As per my understanding "e" stands for external, for connecting external storage.
"i" stands for internal storage, for connecting internal disks.

3. Is "Dell SAS 12Gbps Host Bus Adapter External Controller Low Profile" card compatible for connecting the ME5 Series storage to Dell PowerEdge R650

@DELL-Chris H Thanks for replying to my queries.
Request you to clarify which HBA is compatible with ME5 Series storage, HBA355i or HBA355e.
