R930 PERC H730P & Samsung 870 EVO (consumer)
Hello,
I have a Dell PowerEdge R930 server.
iDRAC: 2.86.86.86
BIOS: 2.14
PERC H730P (Firmware 25.4.0.0017)
Backplane BP13G+EXP 0:1 (Firmware 2.06)
The server has a total of 24 disk slots. I have 16 SAS drives installed and they are working without any issues. I also tested all slots with SAS drives, and they work fine.
However, when I install 8 Samsung 870 EVO SSDs, none of them are detected. The disks only show a fast blinking green light. Previously, I was using these same SSDs in another server (PowerEdge R730 with PERC H730P Mini) without any problem. I removed them from that server and installed them into the R930.
When I check the backplane status from iDRAC, the slots where the SSDs are inserted appear as “Empty Slot.”
Could you please help me with this issue?

Hello, do you have a service tag of the R930 that you can share?

I also meant to ask if you could provide the disks' part number as well.

Hi,
Unfortunately, the Samsung 870 EVO consumer-grade SSDs are not compatible with the Dell PowerEdge R930 server's PERC H730P controller and backplane.
Backplane Firmware: The backplane firmware (in your case, BP13G+EXP 0:1, firmware 2.06) plays a critical role in communicating with the PERC controller. It's programmed to only recognize drives from a list of approved vendors and models. If a drive isn't on this list, it will appear as an "Empty Slot" in iDRAC and not be passed through to the PERC controller.
The fast blinking green light on the SSDs indicates that they are receiving power but are not being properly initialized or detected by the backplane. This is a tell-tale sign of a compatibility mismatch. The reason the drives worked in the PowerEdge R730 is likely due to a different backplane and PERC H730P Mini configuration, which may have been more lenient or had different firmware.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to convert all my disks to SAS. Where can I find the list of supported devices?

Hello, it is best that you try contacting Sales. Just heads up, your server model is quite dated, so I can't be quite sure, so the chance of availability might be slim. Find Parts & Upgrades for Your Dell Computer & more | Dell USA
