R730 Hard Drive Error - ST900MM0006
Hi all,
I'm running a R730 with 16SFF HDD's. All of which are Seagate ST900MM0036. I've bought another HDD from ebay to use if one of mine errors out but it is slightly different being a ST900MM0006.
Unfortunately I am getting the error in iDRAC that the new HDD is incompatible but there is a firmware update for it when I go to the R730 product page. This can only be performed thorough Windows but my server is running TrueNAS, regardless if it was running windows the server isn't allowing the drive to be initialised due to it being apparently incompatible.
Could anyone give me some more information about this issue or tips if there is a way to get around it as I'm quite new to the server space.
Many Thanks!

Hello, do you have a Dell part number on this HD ST900MM0036?

Can you upload a picture like this? We are asking this because of the firmware compatibility.

Of course, first is the HDD that I am trying to use which isn't working.
Next is the HDD which is currently in the server;

Hello, so I see that the one that's currently in your server is from NetApp. We can't guarantee its functioning, I'm afraid. Please send us your service tag through DM if you need further assist. https://www.dell.com/community/en/direct-messaging

The HDD that is currently in my server is functioning perfectly fine, the issue is with the one in the first picture. I cannot get that one to function as it says in iDRAC it isn’t compatible yet on the dell firmware download page there is an available update for it so therefore shouldn’t it work?

@Dell-Martin S Both disks are Seagate of the same series so I don't quite understand the question.

Hello, what all of us can say now is that we advise our customers that they use Dell drives to have them compatible and to apply our firmware on them.

@DELL-Young E I understand that but the drives in use right now aren’t Dell and they work fine. Could it be that the working drives are self encrypting and the non working drive isn’t?

Hello, Thartus,I'm afraid I'll just have to reiterate what I said earlier-we can not vouch for anything that's NOT Dell tested and certified. 3rd parties may work or not. But when they don't, there's basically nothing we can do but tell our customers to start using a Dell certified part.
