R720 HDD firmware upgrade procedure

I'd like to upgrade my drives' firmware with this file:

SAS-Drive_Firmware_8HJR8_WN64_GS15_A00.EXE

This is correct for my drive model and OS (Win2016). The instructions say:

* Do not run other applications while executing Update Packages.

* Do not run storage controller update packages if the controller is in use by other applications.

The firmware upgrade may fail if any of the RAID controllers in the system are performing an I/O background task (that is, consistency check, background initialization, rebuild, or reconstruction). Allow the background task to complete before attempting to upgrade the firmware. Patrol Read tasks will not affect a firmware upgrade.

As this will be done while the OS is running, how can the first requirement be satisfied - no applications running?

Hello,

"Do not run other applications while executing Update Packages." is a generic statement.

I would recommend using iDRAC to upgrade the firmware.

it still is going to reboot the server.

"I could imagine the drive(s) would be disconnected or dismounted briefly during firmware update. "  I don't think this is quite an accurate statement.

idrac will upload firmware and schedule the job that can be executed right away or on next reboot.

but more importantly, please make sure all data been backed up in case if something goes wrong.

Respectfully,

* Do not run other applications while executing Update Packages.

I think it meant other applications than the current running one.

Yes. Does that include Megaraid, OMSA as well? All background processes? VM's? If yes to all, it will be a chore to re-open the current state.

Also wondering, can I select which drives to upgrade or will they all be? My thought is to first upgrade non-critical drives to see if the process works. If it does, then I can upgrade the remaining drives.

I could imagine the drive(s) would be disconnected or dismounted briefly during firmware update.  Any opening jobs, processes already loaded on RAM should be fine.  The warning should confined to any schedulers or applications that invoke the drive participation might fail due to drives' unavailability.

Enterprise hardware experts might chime in with clearer and better answer.

Hello, just an add-on to this post.
https://dell.to/4eCSqor
Scroll down to see "Additional detail"> "Important Information"

This update will not run if any of the following conditions exist
1. Any Virtual Disk that is not optimal.
2. A RAID container that is performing a Background Initialization or Consistency Check.
3. A Rebuild, Resync, or copyback function is taking place.
4. A RAID set that is Partially Degraded or in a Degraded state.

This update will run on drives remaining in a RAID set that is in a Offline state.

There is an architectural constraint with Dell DUP HDD firmware update utility, related to system memory utilization, which is typically encountered on systems with minimal system memory, memory-intensive configurations, multiple RAID controllers, or memory-intensive applications. This issue is typically reported as - The operation was not successful because the device buffer write has failed. And will result in an aborted attempt to update firmware on the identified HDD. Error codes associated with this failure mode include 8009 and 8017. Once an error is detected, the update session is aborted. There is no data integrity or data availability risk associated with this issue. Subsequent attempts to update the HDD firmware may succeed, particularly if system resources are freed up.

@DELL-Young E I am aware of that information as it's in the release notes. It does not answer my initial question: which applications need to stop running before running the upgrade.
