PowerEdge T420 Server newly acquired and formated - Require compatible Server OS & additional storage
Hi,
I have just acquired a PowerEdge T420 that was formatted & hardly used.
I would like to know if MS Server 2022 is compatible with this server model. If I supply Dell with the serial number, can I get/purchase an upgrade for the server OS?
It has a 5 1/2 inch - 600GB HD, 3 x 2.5 inch - 600GB HD & 2 x 2.5 inch - 300 GB HD. What would be the best raid setup if I want to keep these drives.
I would also like to add some additional storage (4TB or larger) mainly for data backup.

The 12Gen Hosts are 12 years and older. There will be no new parts available from Dell. I think the last MS Server OS which is supportet should be Server 2016 which goes out of support in 1/2026?
Iam sure you can run 2022 in an unsupportet manner.
For those you need to buy a MS Server OS for a Dell server after a purchase there will be a "Dell MS Server ROK(Reseller Option Kit)". But i have my doubt that there is a rescent SKU for 2016 ROK can be purchased. I can take a look into the List if needed.
About the storage options you need to tell which RAID Controller you have exactly.... PERC H720P or so? A standard config would be a smaller RAID1 for the OS and a larger RAID10,5,6 for your data.

Hello,
Supported OS here
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-au/drivers/supportedos/poweredge-t420#:~:text=Your%20PowerEdge%20T420%20supports%20these%20operating%20systems:%201,8%20Red%20Hat%C2%AE%20Enterprise%20Linux%206%20More%20items?msockid=1a5e8444c37364fc023690acc29e65bd
And 4TB is on the list.
But as we all are aware, the server is quite old and in terms of where you might get what you need, I'm not so sure. Sorry I can't be of help in that regard.
Respectfully,
