PERC11 qualified SED SSD drives

We are thinking about buying multiple PowerEdge R450 servers and we already received an offer from our distributor which includes an SSD as follows:

>1.92TB SSD SATA Read Intensive 6Gbps 512 2.5in Hot-plug

Now we thought about encrypting the drives through the offered PERC H355 to protect their data against theft as all PERC11 RAID controllers support SED drives:

https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-pr/perc-h355-sas/perc11_ug/self-encrypting-disks?guid=guid-d45617c6-a36d-48ab-94c0-326e973bff72&lang=en-us

>PERC 11 cards support self-encrypting disks (SEDs) for protection of data against loss or theft of SEDs

But we are told that the offered SATA SSD drive is not an SED and we need to buy a different SAS SSD model with "FIPS certified SED". After some research I don't think this is true because all SSD enterprise models on the market seem to support TCG Opal/Enterprise. But as the full SSD features aren't published on the Dell website I can't verify if this is valid for "Dell SSDs", too.

Sadly, it seems even impossible to find the Dell part number of the above SATA SSD (I used the configurator on the Dell website, but it does not contain any part number information). Maybe it is this model?!

>Dell part 345-BDTD

Or are all Dell SSDs detected by PERC11 as SED?

Hello,

1.92TB SSD SATA Read Intensive 6Gbps 512 2.5in Hot-plug

>Dell part 345-BDTD

I took that part number and drilled down the part number to this hard drive:

Part #:6J65H

Part Desc.:SSDR,1.9T,RET2,2.5,YOUNGSVI,EC

1.9TB, SSD, Non Encrypted, SATA, 2.5 Inch, Height 7mm, Intel, Enterprise Class

I didn't find any SATA SSD SED for the R450. You may need to check with Sales to see if Dell carries any Enterprise SATA SED drives.

The only SATA SSD if find are Non Encrypted.

I do see a few SAS SSD SED:

These part numbers are Service part numbers and don’t typically come up on the web site.

Ok, this is really strange. Even after extensive research, I couldn’t find a third-party SSD without TCG Opal / Enterprise support - practically all SSDs seem to be SEDs. Maybe Dell decided to disable this feature for SATA models in their firmware. 🤔

As a user, I don’t mind the better speeds of SAS, but for this specific usage, it feels like overkill. Maybe the additional costs do not matter for our company...
