I stopped the disk initialization on the RAID-1 I created.

hi everyone.

I'm really dumb because I don't understand things well.

I created a Raid1

Then I installed my operating system.

After the OS was installed, I noticed the initialization was still going at 27%

So I stopped it!

Now I'm reading online that the process of initialization is VERY important and should not be interrupted for the stability of the RAID system in the future.

When I go into openmanage and select to run the "initialize disk task" it warns me that data loss will occur.

So I'm afraid to do it, because I don't want to destroy my OS.

What are my options?

Would doing a "check consistency" accomplish the same thing?

Thanks so much for any responses!

Cheers :)

Hi,

You can get to OMSA at https://<server>:1311. In OMSA, check under Storage >a Virtual Disks for the initialization status.
The “data loss” message usually applies to Full Initialization, which wipes the disks completely. Do NOT choose that option.
  • Resume Background Initialization or (Fast Background Initialization) through OMSA or iDRAC. It will impact performance while running, but your OS should stay safe.

  • After It’s Done: Run a consistency check to make sure everything is healthy.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

If it is background initialization, it will restart itself if stopped/cancelled. Try checking again if the initialization is done via OMSA if you have installed it in the OS.

A small brieft about background initialization: is an automatic process that writes parity/mirror data to new redundant virtual disks (RAID 1, 5, 6, etc.) after creation, preparing them for data redundancy and improving performance by identifying potential disk issues early, but it runs in the background, allowing immediate use but impacting performance until complete.

Check consistency option would not be the same as Background Initialization.

OSMA as in localhost:1311?

I don't see it in there in the normal logs.

when I log in to idrac web interface I can see that I cancelled background initialization in the lifecycle logs.

Question - can I just run a "fast background initialization" via OSMA? Will it actually ruin my OS?

Thank you!
