hard drive failed state after replacement
We have a dell poweredge r310. One of the hard drives failed so we replaced it with a new one. We are using openmange. After replacing the hard drive it goes to a rebuilding stage. The rebuild fails and the hard drive goes to failed state. What would be the reason why? I checked the hard drive size and other things all the same. The only difference is vendor id. The failed vendor id is dell and the new one that failed is segate.
We get an event id: 2348. I attached screenshot as well.

Hi,
Firstly, my recommendation is that to do a data back up before doing any troubleshooting. Referring to the logs in your screenshot, there are 2 traces, showing that the drive is not a Dell drive. Can you confirm if the drive has a Dell part number, if yes, please provide to use, we'll check if it's compatible for the server. Next is the sense key error. It is showing SCSI sense data: Sense key: 5 Sense code: 24 Sense qualifier: 0.
According to the SCSI standards, here's what these values indicate:
This error is common when the drive is not compatible or it does not contain Dell firmware, the RAID controller unable to communicate with the drive.

Hello,
I do not have the drive infront of me as it is at our client. I pulled the information from openmanage and attached it if that helps.
I will work with my team to get a a new hard drive. Can you provide me with the link for the best place to get correct hard drive?

The ST3300657SS is listed for the R310, and I found an update available for it, found here. Again as previously instructed, I would ensure you have a backup of the data before doing anything with the Raid, also, I would suggest you update the servers BIOS, iDrac, Raid controller, and drives.
Let me know if this helps.

@DELL-Chris H
Hello, when you say found here do you mean in dell support? There was no link provided in the response. I looked up ST3300657SS. Is this the firmware upgrade you are referring to? Also, after the firmware update, does the drive need to be removed and inserted again for the rebuild or will it be initatied automatically?

Sorry, when I said the firmware can be found here, the word here is a hyperlink. The update you listed is correct, it is the V38WK_WN32_ES68_A07_01 update. Here is the link again, just in case

I had noticed that the drive is listed as a Predicted Failure drive, based on the earlier image you shared. With that being the case I would recommend replacing the drive, and the part number would be F617N.

steps to take
#1 Backup to secure their data
#2 Backup to secure their data
#3 You have no business tinkering with clients hardware if you have not backed up their data
#4 once backed up, replace with suitable drive or time to rethink of replacing that r310 server
