Dell R620 with H710P Mini - the best way to replace all disks with larger disks

Hello,
I have an old R620 server with a H710P Mini and it works great.
There are two virtual disks - Virtual Disk 0 (RAID-10, two spans, OS installed) and Virtual Disk 1 (RAID-10, two spans, data is stored).
I would like to replace all the disks of Virtual Disk 1 with larger disks.
What is the best way to do this?
Can I just replace the disks one by one, wait for the rebuild to finish, and then somehow expand the available space?

Hello,

If you're planning to swap all the drives in Virtual Disk 1 for larger ones, the most important first step is to make a full, verified backup of your data. Even though replacing drives one-by-one and letting the RAID rebuild is technically possible, it comes with some serious downsides.

Option 1: Replace Drives One-by-One

  • Yes, you can replace each drive in the RAID-10 array one at a time, letting it rebuild after each swap.
  • Use OMSA or the PERC BIOS (Ctrl+R) to confirm which drives belong to VD1 before starting.
  • But be aware:
    • It’s very time-consuming
    • The array is in a degraded state during each rebuild—if another drive fails, you risk data loss
    • There’s a performance hit during rebuilds

Option 2: Backup, Recreate, and Restore

  • Back up your data, delete VD1, install the new larger drives, recreate the RAID-10 array, and restore your data.
  • Pros:
    • No rebuild risk—you’re starting fresh
    • Faster overall
    • You can always fall back to the original drives if something goes wrong (as long as you haven’t formatted them)

If downtime is acceptable and you have a solid backup, the second method is usually the safer and cleaner route.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the help,
If I still use option 1, will the virtual disk automatically expand after replacing the last disk or will additional actions be required so that the logical disk takes up all the available space (the size of the new disks is twice as large)?

Nope, the virtual disk won’t automatically expand after you replace the last drive and finish the rebuild. You’d still need to manually expand it

Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend going this route. It’s time-consuming, puts your array in a degraded state multiple times, and there’s always a risk of data loss or corruption during one of the rebuilds. If you can afford the downtime, backing up, recreating the array with the new drives, and restoring your data is a much safer and cleaner option.
