Dell R250 - Installing Windows server 2016 and 2019

Hi,

I have having trouble with installing Windows Server 2016 and 2019. I have tried installing it through the lifecycle manager and when I get it loaded, it doesn't recognize anywhere to install Windows for available drives.

I am running it in a raid 1 configuration, and it isn't recognising the virtual drive. I installed the drives for it, updated firmware, manually downloaded, did the auto firmware update, etc -but nothing seems to of worked. There are still no drives for me to download nor areas that Windows recognizes.

It is worth noting that Win 2019 doesn't show as a supported OS, only 2022 and 25, so I cant do the install in the same way that the other tutorials show.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Kosta

If your OS doenst see the drives there is a missing driver for the the given controller.   If you try it through LCM please update the OS Driver Package first and be sure that the process kicks in.

If not just download the right driver and store it on a usb stick and inject during the installation.

Joerg

What they were referring to was updating the Lifecycle Controllers OS driver file, which embeds the driver for that OS. You can find the WS2019 OS driver file here

hey @GregDuston,

So what I did is I went to the R250 support page, went to 'Drivers and Downloads' and search for 'OS Driver Pack'. From the many driver packs, go to the one with the release date of 20 June 2024, (version 24.05.04, A00), and under 'Important Information,' it will list the OSs that the driver package supports. Download this package

With this package, you can then update the firmware via iDrac. Just go to maintenance > manual update and then upload the OS Driver there. Let it update the server and you should be able to run it from the Lifecycle controller as an unsupervised install in the OS list when installing an OS

The main issue with this for me was going for a firmware update form LCC brought down the most recent OS Driver pack

@DELL-Young E Hello,

Sorry if I wasnt clear but I was asking about the windows 2019 support, it was the fact that when I attempt an install, there are no drivers for me to select even through I have installed and setup a Raid 1 Configuration with the correct drivers.

Thanks,

Kosta

Hey Joerg,

I have tried updating the controllers through LCM, however, although they look updated, the drivers for installation are still not there. Meaning that whenever I go through the install for Windows 2019 and get to the point where I select the disk to install, there is nothing there, and when I go to select drivers there is also nothing

I go through the firmware updater and connect to the Dell website through LCM, and then I download them directly. This then applies and updates but still nothing.

Thanks,

Kosta

GregDuston,

Go to the Dell Driver and Download support page for your server, in the drop down in the upper right put the OS you are installing, then do a server for the OS Driver File. Once you have that update the Lifecycle Controller with it and then try the install again.
