R740 w/ X710 NIC Higher Fan Speed
I have an R740 and Intel X710 network daughter card. A firmware update several months ago caused the minimum fan speed to increase from 25% to 35%. The server is already significantly over cooled from the lack of fan control, but that’s another issue. The recent firmware update to 23.X was supposed to address the fan speed, but for me it has not. Is there a way to force iDRAC to refresh something that might allow the firmware fix to work? Or is it likely that the thermal bug was not completely fixed?
I swapped the daughter card out for an X520 and the fans reverted to 25%. So the NIC is definitely the cause. I’m happy to provide any additional info if needed.

Hello,
Both show to be valid for the R740
Part #:68M95
Part Desc.:CRD,NTWK,13G,RNDC,IN,10G,SFP,4
Network Card, Intel(R) Ethernet 10G 4P X710 SFP+ rNDC, Low Profile
Part #:C63DV
Part Desc.:CRD,NTWK,12G,RNDC,INTEL,10GSFP
Network Card, PCIe, Intel(R) Ethernet 10G 4P X520/I350 rNDC
This white paper has some adjustments you can try such as System Thermal Profile settings and Fan Offsets:

Hello,
It is expected for new iDRAC firmware versions to change fan behavior.
From time to time we update thermal tables to improve system reliability by providing better cooling to the internal components.
Sometimes it will be listed in the fixes and improvements
for example:
It means fans will go faster.
I am not sure what your x710 p/n is as you didn't specify
but for example this part has no active cooling, so it is expected for server to rump up fans to cool it.

@DELL-Young E
Thanks for the reply. I’ll add a bit more info. The new firmware is supposed to address a known issue with elevated fan speeds and says that it does in the release notes. I have the 4 port 10G version referenced and my pn is 068M95 in Hardware Inventory. I’m now on the 23.0.8.A00 firmware version.
Under firmware prior to 22.5.7 my system did not have the same elevated fan speeds. It was default minimum of 25% PWM at that time. The 22.5.7 firmware resulted in a minimum fan speed increase to 35%. Switching out to an X520 card returned the minimum to 25%. I found a reference that the (then) upcoming 23.0 firmware would correct the elevated fan speed, but on my system it has not. I’ve done several system reboots, Lifecycle hardware inventories, iDRAC reboots, etc and it hasn’t changed. The 23.0 release notes say it address the thermal profile issue with the fan speed, but in my case it has not. Screenshot of the firmware release notes below.
Is there anything else I can do? Or has the update not addressed the info on my particular setup and additional info is needed for the devs to address it in a future firmware release? I’m happy to help any way I can. But the server is too loud with this minimum fan speeds and it’s already far more than the system needs to stay reasonably cool. My exhaust temp is only a couple degrees higher than inlet temp, even with the other card at 25% fan speed.

RuckusVol,
Beyond updating the idrac, did you also update the rest of the server, such as BIOS and the QP 10g nic?
If not I would start there.
Also, would you clarify the part number on the network card, so that we can verify it is indeed compatible,

Sorry for the delay. I missed that you'd responded. Yes, all other updates have been applied. I ran it several times just to be sure.
The part number on the card is 4X4RK but in iDRAC it shows up as 068M95. I'm not sure why the Part Number shows differently as dell in the iDRAC hardware inventory. I looked up the two part numbers and maybe the 4X4RK isn't compatible with the R740 and is being misidentified as the 068M95.
I tried to find a list of compatible network daughter cards but couldn't find one. The closest I could find is that is supports 4x10GbE, but doesn't say which cards.

Hello so,
Part #:68M95 Part Desc.:CRD,NTWK,13G,RNDC,IN,10G,SFP,4 X710
Part #:4X4RK Part Desc.:CRD,NTWK,13G,RNDC,EMX,10GSFP,3 Emulex OneConnect OCm14104B
And these are two different parts.
Do you see a label on the physical part? Can you take a picture and show it to us?
Respectfully,

I'm really sorry, I'm making it really hard for you to help me. The card in the server is the 68M95. The photo of the RX4RK I was looking at wasn't the right photo. Here's the card in the machine:
And here's the hardware details for it w/ serial & MAC redacted:
I also have another card on hand, part number C63DV. If that one is compatible (it does not cause the fan speed increase) and the 68M95 is not then I can switch them out.
Thank you for your help and patience. I'm sorry I've made it harder on you to help me.
