R610 The system board PFault fail-safe voltage is outside of the allowable range

Hi,

recently I have a problem with my Dell PowerEdge R610. Sometimes the server shutdown giving error: "The system board PFault fail-safe voltage is outside of the allowable range". If I remember correcly on CPU1. The only way for restart it is performing a power draing unplugging the power supplies. I tried using an UPS because in that facility we have sometimes voltage spikes and sometimes power outage. Everything worked for about 2 weeks, but today I saw the same problem. Anyone know how to fix it? Thanks!

Hello, could you try minimum to POST?

One power supply
- CPU1 (minimum for troubleshooting)
- System board
- Heat sink for CPU1 for prevention of overheating
- One DIMM for CPU 1
- Control panel
- Control-panel cable
- Riser card

I'm just wondering there might be some issue with the extra card added.

Respectfully,

Hi, I can try, but it requires days. Last time the server has been online without errors for 9 days

Before update my server to the Minium POST I tried switching my CPUs. It seems that the problem is regarding socket1 because if I put CPU1 and CPU2 in the sockets and run, it says that CPU1 VCORE PG voltage error, if i try switch the CPU it says always CPU1 VCORE PG. And If i try running the server ONLY with CPU on socket1 it doesn't start, but if i try running only on CPU socket 2 it starts but then an error on bios screen.

Monaldcry7788,

Just to confirm, if you go to the Minimum to Post configuration and try either CPU in CPU1 it fails to start? If that is the case it does appear to be an issue with the CPU 1 slot on the motherboard. What I would start with is checking to see if there may be any debris or pin damage on the board, but beyond that it does sound like a replacement board may be required.

Hi, Can you tell me what does I need to take off for the minium POST? I didn't try minium POST, just swapping the CPUs. Do I need to unplug everything that can be unplugged expect for 1 PSU, and some vents?

@DELL-Chris H
EDIT: Do I need to remove all my RAM too?

Minimum to Post is removing everything internally and externally from the server, except for the following;

One power supply
CPU1 (minimum for troubleshooting)
System board
Heat sink for CPU1 for prevention of overheating
One DIMM for CPU 1
Control panel
Control-panel cable
Riser card

After that then try powering up, if it fails to post then power down and then try the other CPU in the CPU slot, if it still fails then that confirms the issue at the CPU 1 slot.

On a side note, when you are moving the processors around, you are using thermal grease when attaching the heatsink correct? I ask as it can cause an issue if you aren't.

@DELL-Chris H

Hi, do you mean Thermal Paste? If you mean thermal paste yes, my CPUs have the thermal paste on them. I checked the paste and it not dry and it is on all the surface of the CPUs and the heatsink. I only put the heatsink on top of the CPU and close with the 2 locks (after locking the CPU)

Ok, then tomorrow I'll try removing everything from the server and try running it. If it's a board issue, should I buy a new board or directly a new server? Like an used server. It doesn't need to be a rack, a tower is fine.

That would be up to you, but I would think the board is likely going to be the cheaper option, but I am not sure.

Update: For checking for pins damage, what should I see? even a small pin slighty moved?

Hi @DELL-Chris H

I tried running in post minium. If I put the CPU in socket 1 direct error and doesn't boot the bios, if I put the CPU into the socket 2 it runs until the bios and says error put cpu2 in cpu1 socket
