Hello,
Yes you have that correct just make sure to do BIOS 2.4.2 then BIOS 2.9.0.
1. Update the BIOS
a: BIOS 2.4.2
b: BIOS 2.9 0
2. Update the drivers through SUU.exe
3. Upgrade the OS
4. Run SUU.exe again .

Hello,
You need BIOS 2.4.2 for WS2016:
Page 6
https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/microsoft-windows-server-2016_reference-guide_en-us.pdf
You may do firmware first then the OS upgrade.
If you are very far behind on BIOS and iDRAC I would recommend stepping them up then use the SUU tool below to update other firmware.
I'll note: As of the end of 2022 the 12th generation platforms, like the R520, reached the end of support life. Updates are no longer being made.
Try running this older Server Update Utility (SUU), to apply updates. It should have the latest the R520 had.
DELL Server Update Utility, Windows 64 bit Format, v.22.11.00
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=72h31&oscode=ws8r2&productcode=poweredge-r520
Installation instructions
1. Download the Full ISO file.
2. Use ISO mounting software and mount the downloaded iso image.
3. Browse to the folder.
4. Double Click suulauncher.exe.

Hi Charles , thank you for your suggestion .
I have downloaded the above listed full ISO now. I have the BIOS Version of 2.1.2 and the firmware and my idarac is 7 and its firmware version of 2.65.65.65
Do you suggest to do Bios and firmware upgrade before the OS upgrade or after the OS upgrade . I am going to do the Inplace upgarde for the OS
When I run the suu launcher.exe on my windows server 2012 R2 ,does it will also upgrade the BIOS and firmware too , is that right so I don't need to go through the life cycle controller by pressing F10 right ?I can just follow
Installation instructions which is also upgrade the BIOS verison . is that right
1. Download the Full ISO file.
2. Use ISO mounting software and mount the downloaded iso image.
3. Browse to the folder.
4. Double Click suulauncher.exe.
Thank you Charles,
Reagards

Hello,
I would recommend updating the firmware and drivers with the SUU before upgrading the OS.
We also recommend updating BIOS and iDRAC at the same time.
In this case the iDRAC has the most current version 2.65.65.65 while the BIOS is still on old version 2.1.2.
First step up the BIOS with these updates then use the SUU to check for other updated.
Once you have upgraded the OS try running the SUU to check for any new ones.
All these can be done from the OS desktop.
BIOS update:
Next run SUU and update
Upgrade OS
Run SUU again

Hello,
No that does not reflect the step up we want to do. The file you have there is 2.9.0 and you need to do 2.4.2.
You can execute these windows files at the desktop to apply the BIOS
All these can be done from the OS desktop.
BIOS update:
download R520_BIOS_35C9T_WN64_2.4.2.EXE
execute at the desktop and reboot
download BIOS_V134X_WN64_2.9.0.EXE
execute at the desktop and reboot
You could execute both of those with the supplying the exe file in the DRAC if you want. I just figure desktop would be just as easy.
Next run SUU and update
Upgrade OS
Run SUU again

Hi Charles
I had upgraded the R520 to windows server 2016 and everything is fine. The windows server 2012 R2 has a NIC teaming before but at the moment we had just one connected NIC port. The NIC card is Boardcom Extreme Gigabit ethernet. Do you have any idea why the NIC teaming is not available and once the server is upgraded to 2016 and other nic card are also not showing ? Thank you

Hi, after an OS upgrade, older NIC drivers may not be fully compatible with the new OS. This can cause NICs not be eligible for teaming. Ensure drivers are installed and please check this articlemight be helpful.

Hello,
When updating NIC driver/firmware it is recommended to break the team if present, update, recreate team.
Try these steps:
Break any teams you currently have, if any.
Update drivers and firmware with Dell Server Update Utility
Use Microsoft team to create new NIC team.

1. Download the Full ISO file.
2. Use ISO mounting software and mount the downloaded iso image.
3. Browse to the folder.
4. Double Click suulauncher.exe.
