PowerEdge R730 PCIe Bifurcation Support? NVMe AIC Compatibility?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to use an AORUS Gen4 AIC SSD 2TB (which contains 4× 500GB NVMe SSDs) on a Dell PowerEdge R730 server with dual E5-2696 v4 CPUs.

From what I understand, this AIC requires PCIe bifurcation (x4x4x4x4) to be fully recognized. Does the R730 support that from BIOS? Or is there any workaround to make all 4 NVMe drives visible?

So far, only Slot 4 (x16) seems to provide full bandwidth, but I’m not sure if the system can detect all 4 SSDs without bifurcation or a PLX switch.

Any advice or experience would be appreciated!

Koukileo,

The R730 does support PCIe bifurcation, but it's not enabled by default. To enable bifurcation, you'll need to configure the PCIe settings in the BIOS.

You would do so by doing the following
  1. Enter the BIOS setup : Reboot the server and enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2 during boot.
  2. Navigate to the PCIe settings : Go to the Advanced tab and select PCIe Settings .
  3. Enable PCIe bifurcation : Look for the PCIe Bifurcation option and set it to Enabled .
  4. Configure the bifurcation settings : You may need to configure the bifurcation settings to specify the number of lanes to allocate to each device. In your case, you'll want to configure the x4x4x4x4 bifurcation settings.

You can see this on the page here.

Also, with that being said, I am not seeing that the AORUS is supported on the R730, but you could look at the Dell HBA330 part # P2R3R.

Let me know if this helps.
