PowerEdge R310

I have a problem with a cyclic BSOD (Windows 2008 Standard) and system restarts. From the event log from the time of these resets there are two errors:
1. The IPMI device driver attempted to establish communication with the IPMI BMC component device during normal operation. However, communication failed due to a timeout. Timeouts associated with the IPMI device driver can be increased.

2. The device 'iDRAC SECUPD USB Device' USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_iDRAC&Prod_SECUPD&Rev_0323\....) disappeared from the system without first preparing it for removal.

I checked RAID - no errors found
Additionally, I have a SAS drive inserted (outside RAID), but error no. 2 also appears - when it is disconnected. I only have a mouse and keyboard under USB and sometimes an external drive for backup, but this also appears when it is not connected.

Hi,

For issue no.1, I would suggest soft resetting iDRAC. Here's an article https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-my/000126703/how-to-reset-the-internal-dell-remote-access-controller-idrac-on-a-poweredge-server. If does not help, please check BIOS and iDRAC firmware version, if it's not the latest, please update them.

I tried to research on the issue .2; there isn't any known issue mentioned this error. External blogs did say that it's related to OMSA. Is OMSA installed on your server? What version of OMSA is installed? Another thought that I have is the virtual console USB mount, are you using iDRAC Enterprise? Have you used iDRAC USB mount before this error prompted?

Hi, Thanks for answer

1.iDRAC (and Remote Access) has never been and is not used. There was no such need, so there is nothing to reset.

Firmware: I would have to be sure that the new FW will solve the problem, that it fixes this error. Is there any fix specification for this? I remind you that the server is still running and with it the RAID system, and if something goes wrong or something stops working after the upgrade - it will be a problem. This is a very risky operation without being sure that the problem will be solved. For a long time, everything worked without problems on the current FW - even after the end of support for Windows 2008 Server.

2. There is no OMSA installed
iDRAC Enterprise - no
virtual console USB mount - no
"Have you used iDRAC USB mount before this error prompted?" - also no

Hi,

Check the Dell support website for your PowerEdge R310 and download the latest BMC and iDRAC firmware updates. Apply these updates. This is often the first and most effective step.

Check if you have the correct Dell IPMI driver installed for Windows Server 2008. If so, try uninstalling and reinstalling it. You can usually find the driver on the Dell support website.

Look for other errors or warnings in the Windows Event Log around the time of the BSODs and restarts. Pay attention to System, Application, and Security logs. These might provide more clues about what's happening.

While it's less likely to directly cause the IPMI/iDRAC errors, it's a possibility. Run a memory diagnostic tool (like the Windows Memory Diagnostic or Dell's built-in diagnostics) to check for RAM issues.

If firmware and driver updates don't resolve the issue, and memory checks pass, it might be time to consider a hardware problem.
