Parts Commonality?
How does Dell structure it's parts commonality amongst the PowerEdge units? Are the commonality in the generation? For instance; would R930's share parts with Rx30's or R9xx units. I have a bare bones R930 with the four bay hdd drive sff. Im upgrading it to the 24 bay sff set up.
I dont know which part numbers to look for. Will the cages from a R630 have the same part number as my R930?
Is there a resource that lists the part numbers of our servers like in the automotive world?

Hi,
here are answers to our questions.
Would R930's share parts with Rx30's or R9xx units?
* With Rx30s (like R630, R730): Yes, the R930 (13th gen) shares many internal components (RAM, CPUs, PERC, NDC, PSUs, iDRAC) with other 13th generation servers (R630, R730, T630, etc.). However, it will not share chassis-specific parts like the motherboard, drive cages, backplanes, or riser cards.
* With R9xx (like R920 or R940): Less commonality. The R930 (13th gen) will share fewer parts with the R920 (12th gen) or R940 (14th gen) due to generational changes in technology (CPUs, RAM, iDRAC, etc.). Again, chassis parts will be different.
* Will the cages from a R630 have the same part number as my R930?
* Almost certainly NO. The R630 is a 1U server, and the R930 is a 4U server. The drive cages and backplanes are designed specifically for the physical dimensions, mounting points, airflow, and internal connectivity of their respective chassis. They are not interchangeable.
Finding Part Numbers for Your R930 24-Bay Upgrade
You need the specific parts designed for the PowerEdge R930 24 x 2.5" SFF configuration. This typically involves:
* The 24-bay Drive Cage/Chassis Assembly: The metal structure that holds the drives.
* The 24-bay SAS Backplane: The circuit board the drives plug into, which provides power and data connections.
* SAS Cables: Appropriate SAS cables (likely multiple) to connect the 24-bay backplane to your PERC RAID controller(s). The exact cables depend on the backplane connectors and the PERC model.
* Potentially a different/additional PERC: Ensure your current PERC controller can support 24 drives and has the necessary ports for the new backplane.
How to Find the Part Numbers:
* Dell Support Website & Documentation:
* Go to the Dell Support website.
* Enter your R930 Service Tag (if you have one, though it reflects the original configuration) or search for the PowerEdge R930 model.
* Look for the "Documentation" or "Manuals & Documents" section.
* Download the Owner's Manual or Technical Guidebook. These often contain diagrams, parts lists, and sometimes part numbers (though often for Field Replaceable Units - FRUs). Look specifically for sections about drive configurations or replacing the backplane/cage.

@Dell-Martin S Wow! Thanks for all that, and so quick too. This is just what I needed.
