Incompatible Memory Riser Configuration Found

I have a Dell R910 server with the following configuration:

  • 4 Intel Xeon E7-4850 processors;

  • 4 risers;

  • 4 memory modules of 8GB per riser.

Recently, we acquired 4 new risers, reaching a total of 8 risers. In an initial test, I distributed the existing memory modules among the 8 risers. Therefore, each riser had two memory modules (placed in slots 1 and 2 of the risers).

However, when the server started, it displayed the following message:

Memory Buffer I on Risers: B D F H
Memory Buffer II on Risers: A C E G

Incompatible Memory Riser Configuration Found
System Halted!

Observation:

  • A C E G – These are the slots of the original risers

  • B D F H – These are the slots of the new risers

After seeing the message above, I removed the new risers and started the server only with the original risers. The server booted normally and displayed a total of 64GB of RAM (8 x 8GB = 64GB). Later, I removed the original risers and moved the new risers to slots A C E G. When starting the server, it displayed:

No configurable memory detected.
System Halted.

I also tried starting the server only with the new risers in slots B D F H, but the same message was displayed.

Please note that the old riser has the description "II" on its body. New risers purchased recently do not have this description.

It is from intel site and I already posted on another thread that you have Gen3 risers.

You needed for this CPU.

Part #:C2CC5  Part Desc.:PWA,MEM,RSR,SV,HYB,R910,V3  / Memory Riser Assembly, V3 (Required for Westmere-EX systems)

There are two models of the memory expansion board, the old expansion board has the "II" description on its body, so it is the second generation! The spare part number is C2CC5, you can see what the new spare part number is! If you don't see C2CC5 on the new expansion board, it may not be common!

Hello, could you please send us your service tag through DM? https://www.dell.com/community/en/direct-messaging

Also for precise troubleshooting, we would like to ask for your part # for your old and new riser. I'm assuming you'd most likely need to get the same risers.

@ hnyr28 Hello. The old riser is indeed numbered C2CC5, while the new riser purchased is numbered M654T.

Hello,

Think you found the issue. The PowerEdge R910 does not support mixing memory risers with and without the Roman numeral "II".

You may try return the riser with II and purchase one that matches your existing risers.

@DELL-Charles R Hello. The risers we recently purchased are the ones that do not have the Roman numeral "II". I tried to put only four new risers in the server, but when starting, it says "No configurable memory detected".

Hello,

You may try bring it down to minimum to post configuration and cycle through your risers and memory to see if you find a bad DIMM or riser.

R910 minimum to post"

  • Two Processors to POST
  • Two DDR3 RDIMMs in Slots 1 and 2 of Memory Riser_A
  • I/O riser installed
  • One power supply
  • 2.5" SAS backplane (4-drive or 16-drive) installed and connected to system board
  • Control panel connected to system board
  • Power Distribution Board connected to the power supply and system board

I saw that the Intel Xeon E7-4850 processors belong to the Westmere-EX family. Doesn't that affect compatibility with the risers?

Look:

@DELL-Young E According to the information sent privately and this old post, would it be possible to confirm something about compatibility?
