Dual H100NVL Limitation on R760XA
Guys what is the main reason behind limitation on R760XA either configurable with 2 x H100 NVL or 4 x H100NVL..
There is no single H100NVL GPU option available.
Our customer need to buy R760XA with single H100NVL GPU on it .. They dont want to go with R760 cause it supports maximum 2 GPU but R760XA is 4 and they want more capable and expandable option from day-1.
Supermicro has an option single H100NVL that can growht up to 4 x H100NVL on same platform. (SYS-221GE-NR)
What is the limitation if we can sell R760XA without GPU and Riser + Cable and single H100NVL as a kit.. It will work or not.

Hi,
Minimum configuration of GPU for R760XS is 2. The R760XS is optimized for GPU support. I don't think it is possible to install 1 GPU in R760XS.
You should refer to the user guide for Riser configuration for the system to complete architecture, without riser, the server may throw errors prompts during boot and may not complete boot. Also, after complete factory build, upgrading the server's hardware components may have difficulty in sourcing for upgrade kits.
I may suggest to contact sales engineer to confirm the build for your customer before ordering an incomplete factory build configuration.

@DELL-Joey C I'm the Sales engineer :) I understand there is a Riser but why I must fill 2 slots.. It must work with single GPU without bridge board..Bridge board and cable selling separately as a kit if they want to upgrade later..I think its just a sales motion cause we have R760 as well which support 2GPU max and configurable with single H100NVL..But customer thinks with similar price why I should buy a 2 GPU limited expandable server..I'm looking if there is any fw or thermal limitation to use it with 1 x H100NVL

Hi,
My findings are as much as yours in terms of front end documentation. I don't have resources to check if it's limited to firmware. But hardware thermal, it could be related, but it wasn't stated in any of the notes. I did read that NVL, NV Link GPU need to be in pairs to maximize performance and bandwidth. It also did not state it is a must. Perhaps it can, but performance will be affected, and it's not a good image. Probably will need to set expectation to the customer.
