Dell PowerEdge R6515 RAM upgrades

We have a set of PowerEdge R6515 with 512G of RAM (8 slot * 64G) A1-A8.  We have 8 remaining slots and would like to fully populate them (A9-A16). This is a single CPU AMD EPYC 7H12 2.6G 64C/128T and from what I've read all 16 slots are supported with the single CPU.  However, it seems that with dual rank the RAM Is supported at 2933/MT not the current 3200/MT.   Assuming we purchase the same spec RAM at 3200/MT or 2933/MT will this be a problem or will the system dial the speed down to 2933/MT?

From this document the current 3200/MT RAM will be dialed down to 2933/MT:

https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/poweredge-r6515/per6515_ism_pub/general-memory-module-installation-guidelines?guid=guid-80b1c1ad-14b7-4dd6-b122-abb0c82bd3e8&lang=en-us

Would it matter if the new RAM is like the original set is 3200/MT and the system will dial them all down to 2933/MT?

Otherwise, do we have to repurchase 8 2933/MT sticks vs just adding either 8 more (same spec) 3200/MT or 2933/MT?

Hello thanks for choosing Dell and welcome to our community.

In this case, I would recommend sourcing the same original parts from sales so that you'll end up installing identical DIMMs.

If you provide p/n for the DIMMs, you are adding we can check if they are validated for this system, assuming they are Dell branded, not 3rd party ones.

Respectfully,

They will be third party.  However, can you confirm that all RAM slots are supported and that we can use 3200/MT for all and they system will speed down to the required supported speed for the given installation (all 16 slot populated).

Hello,

You are correct. The system will clock down the DIMMs automatically with two DIMMs per channel:

DIMM type

Rank type

Capacity

DIMM rated voltage and speed

Operating Speed

1 DIMMs per Channel (DPC)

2 DIMMs per Channel (DPC)

RDIMM

1R

8 GB

DDR4 (1.2V), 3200 MT/s

3200 MT/s

2933 MT/s

2R

16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB

DDR4 (1.2V), 3200 MT/s

3200 MT/s

2933 MT/s
