Clarity around iDrac firmware and Bio Poweredge R320
I am attempting to update the BIOS and the iDrac of a Dell R320. Ive read they need to be upgraded together in order to avoid issues.
I was planning on copying the order seen in this Dell Community thread. https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/systems-management-general/r320-idrac-7-upgrade-path/64a3fbe8f4ccf8a8dea92c5a
I can upgrade the bios without issue. I load the efi file to a usb and within the bios I can select the USB and file and the bios will update.
However I cant seem to update my idrac. This is likely because I dont have an idrac card in the system. I am not planning to get one as Im happy just using the server with TrueNAS Core.
So am I safe just updating the bios to the newest version in steps, or is it critical to update iDrac? Perhaps I do need to get an idrac card in order to upgrade the firmware? Ive no immediate plans to get one and use the function but maybe one day in the future. Ive seen there is an OS updater which is compatible with Windows Server. Id rather not have to install Windows Server just to update iDrac.

Hello thanks for choosing Dell and welcome to our community.
BIOS updates are needed for security reason.
Let’s update the BIOS first then move on to idrac update as well, shall we.
Let us know if you have any further questions.
Happy holidays.
