R7R730: no fans turn on. Entire cooling assembly gone?
My entire system was working, and I tried some cable rearranging. After reconnecting a backplane signal 1 connector, I reattached the cooling assembly.
Now the fans don’t work - all are stuck at 0 RPM. Fan 4 spins up a little upon power off. I tried resetting iDRAC and NVRAM. All the diagnostic lights on the rear of the board are green. The fans are connected tightly- I even tried connecting individual fans directly to the motherboard.
What could have happened? How do I resolve this? The assembly has no electronic components, and the individual fans are fine.

Hello,
I cannot say exactly what happened, I suggest you to troubleshoot, everything starting with all minimal components to post and then see if something change.
Unfortunately it could be also the motherboard that is faulty.
Thanks

I’ve tried removing other parts; no luck. The rest of the system is fine and runs properly (aside from the thermals and CPU throttling.) Also, the backplane power connector near the fan jumpers works.
The strange thing is fan 4 works. Fan 4 has been involved in other R720/R730 issues (such as spinning even when the power is off.)

And if you swap FAN 4 and FAN 3, the issue follows the slot?
Any error in the iDRAC? And how FANs are seen in iDRAC?
Thanks

I also tried upgrading/downgrading iDRAC firmware, and changing the thermal profile. No luck.
I would also suspect the system board; is there some diagnostic indicator for that section which I am missing? When the server is off, 3/6 rear lights are green, but that seems normal.

Yes, fan slot 4 spins at shutdown regardless of which fan.
iDRAC reports all fans in error at 0 RPM. Indeed, no fans (including 4) run when the server is on.

No, unfortunately I don't see other diag code, but I'm agree, if issue follows the slot we need to replace the motherboard.

I replaced the system board; that was the problem. The fans all work again.
I’d like to transfer my iDRAC 8 Enterprise license away from the old board, via system tag. Can you email me?

Hi, I'm afraid when it comes to getting a license, you'll need to use digital locker or call the support center with your service tag.
