R740xd - Rear Backplane Fan Speed
Hello,
I have an R740xd with 2 x Silver CPU's and 64 GB of RAM. I've noticed with the rear backplane installed, whether 2 SSD's are installed or not, (not midplane) the fans kick up to around 15000 RPM (all 6 of them) steady. Without the rear backplane they will hover around 9500 RPM.
Temps appear well within range, so I'm looking for options to slow down (and thereby quiet) the system a bit.

Hello,
Did this server come with the rear backplane and if so has it done this from the start?
Has anything changed from the original configuration?
I will note that field changing of backplane configuration is not supported. We don't have kits for that.
I could start with recommending to make sure the system firmware is up to date. There may be fixes for known issues.
Maks sure all shrouds and blanks are in place and that the lid is on. With the lid off the fans would run at max speed.

No, it came with the backplane installed. However I've had to move the server closer to people, so its become a topic.
Everything is up to date based (both OS and hardware). Do those fan RPM's look abnormally high for the temps observed? I've never been able to determine what is expected from the various posts on noise/fan speeds.

Hello, from what I see, it's working as designed. With specific config fans will have to accommodate for extra parts installed. Rack servers are not designed for office use, tower one seems more suitable.
Customers in warranty can also send in TSR logs but considering you have already done some testing, it should match your findings.
