R730 fans (0H0H89) making high pitch whistle/whine

I'm thinking it's the bearings in the fan (0H0H89) chassis. Pretty ear piecing, even at low RPM. Buying additional fans isn't an immediate option, unfortunately.

Is there a recommended lubricant I can use to help remove the sound? Is there any disassembly documentation for the R730 fan so I can get to the bearings?

I appreciate any help with this.

Thank you.

Hello MattyRex,

I am sorry you faced with this issue.

I suppose there is not special documentation, how to get the bearings, there is only instruction, how to remove and install fan:

https://dell.to/330LCCg

Could you please share, how many fans are installed in server?

Where do you put the server ? If the server is not in a data center environment, fan noise is normal server behavior (because of acoustic).

You can also check settings:

a)F2 - > System BIOS Settings - > System Profile Settings -> System Profile -> "Performance Per Watt (OS) "

b)Boot into the Life Cycle Controller - > Select System Settings - > iDRAC Settings - > Thermal Category - > Change Thermal Profile to Minimum

Does the fan noise go or stay after applying this settings?

Please let me know if you have any questions,

Thanks

Hi Maria,

Thanks for the response. I apologise, I should have explained a bit further in my original post.

There is the full amount (6) installed. The server is with another R730 and an R510, both located in a rack in an office (this is fine given the size and multiple other servers under much more load than this R730), so noise is not an issue. We understand well the noise that can be generated via airflow.

The thermal profile has already been changed to what you've mentioned above. However, the sound of the airflow and high RPM is not the issue here. It's the high pitched whistle/whine coming from approximately 5 of the fans at any given RPM. I know this because we tested each individually in other chassis with known working fans without this problem. Whether at 3000 or 10000 RPM. It's quite ear piecing and as a result can't be turned on currently.

Is there a particular lubricant that's used by the tech's at dell to fix this issue. If so, could you share? Any information regarding actually fixing these fans would be really appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello MattyRex,

Sorry for misunderstanding and thank you for detailed description. From my knowledge, usually such fans are just replaced, but there is no special tools to fix them.

We can also check for other Dell Community Forum users replies, maybe somebody could share their own experience.

Thanks
