Hi @jAck2792,

Fan speed is by design to enhance the cooling function for improving the long-term reliability of a CPU and performance.

However, we do have the option to change the thermal settings starting from 12G (PE R720)

The iDRAC creates a thermal profile based on the hardware installed and we recommend you to update the BIOS and iDRAC firmware to the latest if not done already.

Also, please refer to the below document for optimal operating temperature ranges for PE R720.

unfortunately neither of them really got what i want i dont want the fans running at 70% when theres no load either and changing the thermal settings to exhaust made no difference unfortunately as its way to high and to my knowledge no way to change the temperature of it  either

and both my systems are running latest drac and bios firmware

Would you confirm if the server was ordered with the GPU's, or if the GPUs were added after the fact?

Let me know.

Hello jAck2792,

Is this a configuration that was working and now does not or is it a new install?

Could you post a picture of the GPUs showing the Dell label so we can confirm if it is validated for the R720?

Items to check if you are using the correct slots and other guidelines:

Hello jAck2792,

Have you verified you followed the installation guidelines and slot priority page 72 : https://dell.to/3RuNjeL

Ensure the GPU enablement kit is available.

If the GPU was selected at purchase time then these would be included.

GPU enablement kit includes:

– Low-profile heat sinks  (if you don't have these you could be blocking some air flow)

– System board support brackets

– Power cables for the GPU cards

– Filler brackets with closeout EMI shield for unoccupied PCI-e slots

Ensure that your system uses the redundant 1100 W power supplies.

I didn't find a part number for the enablement kit so you may need to contact sales for that.

jAck2792,

Are you seeing any errors reported, or the temperature fault light illuminated on the server? Also, would you confirm if the idrac version is showing as 2.65.65.65 on the server? I ask as the iDrac merged with the Lifecycle controller awhile ago, and just wanted to make sure you are up to date on the correct version.

Let me know what you see.

no errors showing up everything works fine apart from temperature wise and yes the drac is running 2.65.65.65 firmware so everything should be fine

i have indeed and i do have all that already but i do not understand how low profile heat sinks would make much difference in the fact fans arnt ramping up i should already have all the stuff i need for the system to work as it posts and does function

Hi, there are numerous factors that decide that fan speed, and it's complex.
how many cards are plugged in, what's the power usage, what CPU are you using, what is the BIOS setting etc... it can be anything and we cannot just pinpoint one thing.
