PowerEdge R640 lower fan speed

Hi,

I have an PowerEdge R640 with acces via IDRAC. I want to reduce the speed because it is to loud for the office where it is placed. How can I do it?

Changes in https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/de-de/000257346/poweredge-how-to-change-the-fan-speed-offset?lang=en did not had an immediately effect.

Thanks!

Hi,

The fan speed is automated by iDRAC and the profile settings are the only configuration that can be used by users.

Can you check the fan RPM if it's in a range of 2000 to 8000? - Is the iDRAC/LCC and BIOS up to date?

How many drive configuration is the server on? Is there any non-Dell component in the server? How many PCIe cards is installed?

Would you confirm if the server is up-to-date on BIOS, iDrac, and controller?

Also, do you happen to have a Boss card installed on the server?

I ask these questions as the idrac is what controls the fans speed, so if it is behind it can cause fans to ramp up. The other is that when a Boss controller is installed it requires additional cooling and can supersede the requests for lower performance (lower fan speed) in order to protect itself.

Let me know and we can go from there.

Thank you!

Everything is up to date and there is no boss card installed.

Is this fan in general able to be reduced in speed because "TheMattHatter_17f8db" said that it need to be a special fan?
