Dell C6525 iDRAC does not come up when powering on the C6400 chassis

Hi guys,

I have a C6525 sled node running in C6400 chassis. Everything is working except the following issue:

- When connecting the power to the chassis the Fans are on however iDRAC seems not running and I'm not able to ping and access iDRAC's IP.

- Next I manually press the power button on the back of the C6525 to turn it on. And how iDARC also works and I can access iDRAC Web GUI.

- Similarly when I shutdown the C6525 host iDRAC also goes down
I expect iDRAC is always up and running for the remote control.

Config: I have almost default configuration only use LOM to embedded NIC for iDRAC network interface and host interface. Both NICs are working fine when it works.

I have updated all firmware to the latest versions:

Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet BCM5720 - B8:CB:29:BE:38:7E 21.40.9
Chassis PSU.Slot.1 00.3D.67
Chassis PSU.Slot.2 00.3D.67
Dell EMC iDRAC Service Module Embedded Package v3.6.0, A00 3.6.0
Backplane 1 4.36
Chassis CM Embedded 3.71
BIOS 2.18.1
Dell OS Driver Pack, 21.03.08, A00 21.03.08
Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 7.20.30.00
Dell 64 Bit uEFI Diagnostics, version 4301, 4301A56, 4301.57 4301A56
System CPLD 1.1.4
Lifecycle Controller 7.20.30.00
And Chassis manager module FW: V3.71-2023-06-07
Note: I also have C6420 and its iDRAC works as expected.

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

Luis_le,

That definetly isn't normal behavior, as most PowerEdge servers, including sled-based systems like the C6525, the iDrac should power on independently of the host system. It should also be accessible as soon as the chassis is powered, even if the host is off. As this allows for out-of-band management, including remote power control and diagnostics.

What I would suggest you start with is powering off the server, removing the power cables, then hold the power button for 20 seconds. Once done then reinstall the power cables, but wait a couple minutes before powering up the server.

Next I would try resetting the iDRAC, which you can do by either

Hold the “i” button on the front panel for 15 seconds.

Or

via RACADM (if accessible):
racadm racreset

You can also try moving the C6525 to a different slot in the C6400 chassis, or test with a known-good sled in the same slot to isolate the issue.

Lastly, I would ensure that the iDrac is configured to use the correct NIC:

  • Boot into the BIOS/System Setup (F2 during POST).
  • Navigate to:
    • iDRAC Settings > Network
  • Confirm:
    • NIC Selection is set to LOM or Dedicated (depending on your setup).
    • Enable NIC is Enabled.
    • Active NIC is correctly selected.
    • IPv4 Enabled is Yes and IP settings are valid.

Let me know if this helps.
