Article New Kings of Data
Article: http://www.itbusinessedge.com/cm/blogs/vizard/the-new-kings-of-data/?cs=48934
This is an interesting article that says, "database administrators (DBAs) who have greatly expanded their roles." EMC along with other companies has DBAs who implement the physical storage, manage the OS and Oracle databases. Is the shift in expanding the DBA role to include other databases? It takes years to become an experienced Oracle DBA and a few more years to become an Oracle Applications DBA but, is that enough? Will the same Oracle Applications DBA be managing Greenplum and other new database technologies too? Learning new technology is always important to professional development and growth so it does make sense that an Oracle DBA would be interested in the next big way of databases. Anyone exanding their roles from Oracle to cover new database technologies?

There are many DBAs that will be interested in these new databases. Keep in mind, back many years ago, the same question was being asked about developers responsible for hierarchical databases. Those that expanded their roles to include and often embrace the new relational databases were greatly rewarded with being highly sought after Oracle experts. I made that jump back in 1998 with Oracle version 4 and I have been able to define my own path ever since, thanks to that decision. It is up to the individual to see the value and sieze the moment, or go the way of the COBOL programmer.
btw: I think there may be a few of them in the basement, but nobody knows for sure.
