Photo transfer from Nikon camera to Dell PC

I have been trying to transfer photos from my Nikon Coolpix P600 camera (new battery new card) to my Dell Optiplex 3020 desktop PC without success. Using the cable supplied with the camera I insert it to different USB ports front and back but nothing happens, just a blanl screen. The manual states"The connecction may not be recognized if the camera is connected to the computer via a USB port" !! Then how can I ransfer photos

 Also there doesn't appear to be any means of downloading the ViewNX2 installer or the Nikon Transfer 2 programme. When I try that there are no appropriate boxes/words to click on?

Can anyone help me please.
